It is not a question of trusting people carrying, it is a question of following the rules! If you don't want to follow the rules because you are captain awesome, then you are an a$$hat that I would not like to associate with and a prime example of why anti's hate gun people!

ASSHAT and CAPTAIN AWESOME. Great names.

YES. Follow the rules. No loaded guns/chambers open when folks are down range.

I didn't want to say it, but the guys carrying open were wannabies. Khaki shirt and black cargo pant's and jack boots. Like a Bass Pro (can't spell manican) all dressed up. They all had the, look at me, I'm carrying open thing going on.

And in this day and age, you don't know who or what is at the range.

I carry every day, whether for my main job, part time job, and if that makes me something people don't like then oh f-ing well. I have a MD Carry Permit so hate till your hearts content. The people it offends won't be there to save my ass when I need that gun, nor will they be there to save me if someone tried to kill me at the range for my property. The park personnel or DNR police won't save me either.

I follow the rules at elk neck or whatever range I use, its why I avoid elk neck when I can. When a range has more stringent rules than the state of Maryland has, well its freaking pathetic.

I use Delmarva. Shooter police themselves and open carry there and no one gets shot.

Unlike fudds, I like to practice my draw to make myself more proficient in case I actually have to use my firearm. My gun is a tool, not some safe queen for my fudd range trips.

Since people want to " tell it like it is". I'll say what I think about people uncomfortable around guns.

I can assure you there will be no open carry at Elk Neck any weekend that an RSO is on duty. If there is and its not corrected, inform either ENSF or myself here on MDS and it will be corrected with that RSO. You are at a public range on State property. MD law does not allow open carry in public, therefore you would be breaking MD law.

If you are there and see it, you can always call DNR at the posted number on the boards at each range.

The range masters are volunteers and are not obligated to watch over your stuff. They're usually just collecting brass.
Thanks so much for all the compliments especially about the RSO's "just collecting brass", that was probably uncalled for and rather tacky . The RSOs are Volunteers (they don't get paid, nada) they donate their time and try to keep everybody safe. True, it is a thankless job and there are very few people who choose to do this. The RSOs are out there every weekend in the cold of Winter and the heat of Summer and oh yeah in the rain also.

Rules are there for a reason, just like every other shooting range, the rules are not voted on but rather approved by the State of Md. and not all the rules are popular. It sounds like a fun idea to practice your quick-draw as you are probably very proficient at it, but how about someone next to you tries to emulate your skills and shoots you instead.

Remember, it is a STATE RANGE in a STATE FORREST and that means that EVERYONE is eligible to come and shoot, extra precautions are implemented for this very reason.

Just like every other range, if you don't like the rules go shoot elsewhere, Elk Neck is a wonderful place to shoot just remember to bring your own target stand.

If the RSO job sounds like something you would like to do .... Sign Up and deal with some of these people instead of bitchin' about rules.

Note: everywhere you go it's YOU that is obligated to watch Your own stuff. You are responsible for Your stuff, so bring a friend !

Thanks for sharing about the theft and the risk.

I was shooting in Texas once on private property. After a while a family friend of the landowner that I did not know showed up. He had a revolver - 38/357.

I thought that was bad etiquette. I was actually teaching a first time shooter and he shows up. Turns out he was an ex-commie from Cuba, but now in the USA because of wet foot dry foot policy.

He had a story to tell and a restraining order. Next time I'm going to tell the landowner not to let anyone join me. Hell, I wouldn't even trust my own brother.

Why go there or any Maryland State Range? Kind of like feeding the dog that bits you. Join a private club and support their activities.

If one wishs to comment one way or the other about *following the posted rules because they are posted* then feel free to have at it.

However , in the absolute sense a handgun is safer secured in a holster atached to a live human than sitting on a bench. And a shooting range IS one of the places that by LAW are ok to carry. Potential violation of range policy , yes, 4-203 , no.

Not that I've used said State Forrest ,range , but reading between the line , it would seem that for full policy complience , each shooting party would require minimum of one non-shooting member to stay behind and gaurd the guns and other property.

When I shot there I would get... "Umm... Sir... you can't... uhhh... do... oh... you look like you know what you're doing."

Even at the NRA Headquarters Range I got this... "Sir... we don't allow double taps here" looks at my target... looks at me... "go right ahead... you look like you know what you're doing."

I've run a few ranges... I think I just might be qualified.

I am sure that ex police officer who got himself killed at that range in laplata a few months ago thought he was qualified too.

You guys are funny. I really hope you don't dwell on the what if's in life as much as you do about Elk Neck. Mountains out of mole hills comes to mind. To my knowledge there have been no thefts of anything at Elk Neck and no one going on a shooting rampage as well. The only incident was a negligent discharge a few years ago. Could it happen? Sure. Will it happen, not likely.

Don't forget to worry about your drive to and from the range. You could be in an accident and unconscious. Then someone will steal your firearms. ;)

Not to mention the absolute last thing Maryland gun owners need is a shoot out at a gun range. Talk about tarnishing our image

Gun owners, we are our own worst enemy in this state.

A simple non authoritative complex conversation to those who break the rules will usually set someone straight.

I can only speak for myself.

What exactly makes you (or anyone) qualified to break the rules of a private or public range?

And this is what I really don't understand. In a civilized society a certain amount of etiquette is required. Following the rules is part of that, if for no other reason than you are a guest at the establishment.

No one here is saying they break the rules of is telling people to do so. They are saying how stupid it is for gun people to be scared of people with a holstered firearm at a shooting range.

I use Fudd Neck only when absolutely necessary. I use other ranges that allow me to stay armed when I have to do down range.
