I work in Montgomery County and I used to live there. Due to the uptick in crime I've started bringing my Uniden SDS-100 to work but I'm not picking up any traffic on law enforcement and other channels....
Back when I lived in Rockville about 2 years back I used to pickup every station except for the uber private special ops ones. What gives?? Does the public not have a right anymore to listen to public chatter??? These agencies are funded by our tax dollars still are they not???

No. The bad guys can listen to traffic if you can.

When FEMA coordinates with local police to take our supplies it would be foolish to inform the citizenry before hand.

If you can't listen on a scanner, they most likely switched to encrypted communications. They will give the press permission, and some others, but not us.

Many of the police bands have been encrypted preventing the bad guys from listening. This also stopped the good guys too.

"Trunked" comms, you can't pick them up.
Digital trunking isn't new and is absolutely able to be picked up if you have the frequency and talkgroup programed into the right equipment.

I knocked the dust off my old Radio Shack PRO-96 that I reprogrammed maybe 4 or 5 years back. I'm down here in Charles County and can't pickup MoCo or PG communications obviously, but I'm sitting here listening to Charles County Sherriff on trunked channels right now, MDSP still coming through for me as well.

RadioReference.com is a great reference for this stuff. Here is a link to the state of MD : https://www.radioreference.com/db/browse/stid/24 .You can filter by county then view all trunked systems in the county and if you have a digital trunking scanner you can listen to this stuff still.

The Uniden SDS-100 is definitely a Digital Trunking scanner. IDK if the MoCo channels have changed in the last 2 years since you used it. But you can check what you have programmed vs this link : https://www.radioreference.com/db/browse/ctid/1203/trs

You may just need to update the frequencies and talkgroups? Or something else up with the radio? Do ANY frequencies come through? Got another radio you could transmit and monitor the frequency with the SDS-100 to verify it still works?

I live in MoCo police D5 and my Uniden BCD536HP picks up those comms right now. MSP coming in loud and clear, too.

Very frustrating my old bearcat doesn’t work anymore. I use 5-0 radio and OpenMHz app. OpenMHz is pretty cool because it records the calls and you can play back.

It's because crime is at an all time low, thanks to comrade Joe and his building back better. Nothing to report on the radio.
