These folks aren't like they are in MD. You have to spend time to get to know them and get accepted.

I'm planning on finding a spot in WVa as soon as I can.

Anyone know anything about Roane county? I see alot of land for sale in that area.

I get over to Roane occasionally, Usually the Spencer-Reedy area. It is on the side of the Appalachian plateau that is lower in elevation, usually peaks less than 1000 feet (which means a better chance of finding plots with areas in the level. It borders the Parkersburg area but is still really rural. If you like dark night skies it has some of the darkest in West Virginia (due to the absence of any large population clusters). Its pretty, wooded, hilly, two lane living.

You also take into consideration elevation of the land. Once you get into the more mountainous parts, along the appalachians, the higher the elevation so weather patterns can be different.

"that region as a whole has a pretty highly inflated opinion of itself. "

I'm serious.....the part of WV I'm thinks it's some sort of latter day carribean resort with what they are still asking for in land prices. People are sitting firm on their prices just like it was 2006.

Housing prices aren't bad on small lots, but as soon as their is something amounting to a decent amount of property, the price goes up exponentially.

Let me know if you do, I'll give you a hand. This is me today in front of your mountain retreat. :D

That's what I'm looking for. Also the Least coast zombies would have to cross the mountains to get to me:thumbsup:

Since I am from WV I have thought about buying some land back home too. Probably down in the south rather than north. I think there are some good buys too. The key to me is remembering many down that way are clanish. I always try to make friends anyway and once you make a couple down that way word gets around that you are okay. Word also gets around if you are an ugly american, aka: a$$. If you want to have that piece of heaven make sure you try to integrate with them. Once you do you will know some of the best people on the planet.

For me, I still can't stand city people and live with them every day. Bummer.

We got back a few days ago, the so called antique and gun shops are REALLY proud of what they have. In other words they're nuts, trying to score a grand slam on every deal. Food and lodging was cheap compared to what we're used to, people were fine and we'll go back again I'm sure but they can keep their wares until the get a reality check. You all have seen the "blue glass" (not even cobalt) violin vases? Dime a dozen at ANY auction, they wanted 30 bucks a pop.

I bought 68 acres a couple of years ago just outside MD in WV. I couldn't buy 10 acres in MD for what I bought it for. The license are much higher but you make up for it in the price of the land and the low taxes.

One of the funniest situations I've ever encountered was when I came down to MD to work and the people here were mocking West Virginians for being "hillbillies" or being similar to characters from Deliverance (good book and decent movie, but it's set in Georgia, not WV). Yet the same people who did the most mocking were invariably the most uneducated and simple-minded folks I'd ever encountered. I guess it made them feel better to imagine that somehow, somewhere, there existed people dumber than themselves.

As far as complaints about trespassers and property crime, wouldn't that make the idea of owning property in WV more attractive to Marylanders? Add in some rape and murder and it would make the place feel just like home to you.

I would love to get 20-30 acres with a small cabin no frills and nowhere near any subdivisions or covenants. Prefer to buy next to a MDShooter's property, safety in numbers and compatible ammo. Norton, what County, not your address just the county?
How about a group buy ? 200 acres 150 shareholders a hunting/shooting club, there are enough brains here to figure this out. Each shareholder would also be an owner and responsible for the upkeep. Any Ideas ?

I have a place in southern WV, and the people there are some of the nicest I've ever met.

Personally, I'd let bygones be bygones. No sense in kicking a hornet's nest full of "Deliverance"-type goobers.

As a person who owns a property in rural central PA, you have to carry a big stick. They day you dont people walk all over you.
