His arguement, and he is correct, is that there is nothing in the law that specifically defines what a heavy barrel is.

Well, presumably, since the law only exempts Colt Sporter HBAR AR 15, then THAT is what a heavy barrel is. I.e., if it doesn't say it on the gun, then it isn't one. And, correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that's how it was interpreted before the AWB sunset (I didn't live here @ the time, so I can only go by what I have read).

Ironically I would probably be able to buy it from an out of state dealer easier than I would a Md dealer since the out of state dealer are subject to the law only NOT the whims of the MSP.

Except that the purchase of a long gun in another state is only legal if it's legal in BOTH states.

It depended upon the shop. I was told a Stag HBar was cash n carry a few years ago from a dealer. I don't believe the wording changed at all from law to law regarding the Colt HBar.

That is the whole point - it isn't illegal (as in what the law says) in Md.

Not to get too far off course, but wouldn't a 'Sporter HBAR' lower be legal to buy/sell post 10/1 by the way MSP is interpreting the law?

And likewise I was told a RRA HBAR profile barreled AR wasn't an HBAR because RRA didn't have any heavy barrel nomenclature in their description.

I would think some companies would sue the state for favoritism it the state does not have "or copy" in the language.

IMO which might be wrong, the only way to buy or transfer a lower post Oct 1 is if it's a complete HBAR.

The 4473 would say 5.56, rifle.

In the old days, HBAR was stamped on the lower receiver. Colt makes HBARs now without these markings:

the 6920 is not legal cause it doesnt jhave a heavy barrel. a heavy barrel is the same barrel diameter from front to back. i would call teh 6920, which i have a stepped barrel since it changes diameter during its length. in the store i work we were given the same diameter barrel defination, and we still sell heavy barrels.
    my 6920 shoots fine

Actually it isn't quite the same profile. I don't have the measurements but there is a slight tapering on the barrel from the breach to the muzzle.

Most HBARs are .75" from the front sight to the muzzle. They are roughly .98" from the chamber and often step down to .85" as you approach the front sight.

That sounds right. I have an actual Colt AR15 HBAR Sporter and it has tapering much like you describe.
