      It really only puts some extra wear on your extractor (which is a wear item anyway and cheap to fix) and some brands of steel ammo can muck a bit up your chamber depending on how its lubricated (the old wolf was notorious for it, the polymer coated wolf isn't bad).       If your question is about spring tension and keeping the gun "locked" as opposed to closed, know that springs wear from cycling, not from remaining in either position for any amount of time. that said, Cable Locks are fairly useless.

      I think they mostly started in Japan where firearms are damn near impossible to come by but lots of guys obsessed with gunsmith cats and other such anime are obsessed with guns too. Tokyo Mauri is still one of the leading producers of high end airsoft.

      If you buy games in 10 round books they are cheaper, Sparks and I used to go out fairly regularly, but life seems to be hectic for both of us now (although he has a better excuse than I). That said, If anyone wants an evening skeet or trap match drop me a line I need to get out there more often.
