Glad this thread came along. I was set to look at a few houses in Parkville (one of them on Linwood) this weekend. Maybe I should check into the area a bit more.

I'd suggest trying to stay north of the beltway or at least above Putty Hill Rd. That seems to be as far north as the problems have gone so far. Still a good area otherwise. Schools are still decent(they just dumped a fortune into upgrading Parkville High), and being centrally located between Towson and White Marsh is convenient.

Just look at the once "Prestigious" Columbia MD, the mall isnt safe and hell they are shooting fast food managers now.

James Rouse programmed that into his "planned" community.
Let's put all of the low income housing near the commercial centers so that the skells can just walk over and steal and rob.
Now the community I grew up in, Wilde Lake, is a ghetto and it's village center is a ghost town slated for demolition this Spring.

This is very similar to what is happening in Delaware. First it was worse in Wilmington. Then moved to New Castle. Now Bear, DE.

I hate to say it, but it might come to a point where it's warfare on the streets.

My Brother lives in Newark, DE. There have been several murders in his neighborhood. That area's going down the toilet.

    On a different note:

I moved to Ellicott City, just off of Rt. 40 in the late 80's when I first moved to MD. It was a really nice area, good shopping, dining and schools; no major crime. We moved out in the late 90's. I went back through there a while back and it felt like a different area. Half the signs on the store fronts weren't English and a lot of stores had bars on the windows.

My family and I used to live in Parkville close to Loch Raven and Putty. Not too bad, but as Section 8 houses popped up on our street and my wife heard the next door neighbor talking on his phone about robbing people "back in the day" we quickly moved to Harford Co. where I grew up.

As has been stated prior to this, Parkville is going down hill as the city trash spread out.

Sounds like you lived in or near Loch Raven Village. I remember when that was a preferred neighborhood to live in. My wife teaches at Pleasant Plains elementary. That once had the reputation as one of the best schools in the county..no longer. Sadly, we are now paying for lunch for 50% of the kids in that school...........

Just down the street from IHM on Joan Ave. We take a drive by there every now and then and the place is continuing the downward slide. From what we understand everybody now has rat traps in their backyards (facing the alley) due to a massive rat infestation.

Check out Mylocalcrime.com if you want to see what crimes have taken place around you. It lets you put your address in to see locations, and dates of crimes in the last 7 months or so.

My girlfriend keeps insisting that the Owings Mills mall was actually nice at one point in time. Looking at it today, I have a hard time believing that!

    Why not?
Golden Ring Mall was nice at one time and it got so bad they had to tear it down to get rid of the trash.:sad20:

Just about every mall I have been to lately seems to be going downhill. I live near the Arundel Mills mall and the new casino there has led to an exponential increase in trash people in the area.

Lakeforest Mall in Gaithersburg has gone waaaay downhill since the 90's. Full of gang-bangers, illegals, and ghetto trash. There was a time when that mall was very nice, had great stores, and was safe to go to at night. They have tons of security now but it is still not safe to go there at night anymore.

Montgomery Mall is still really nice though and I feel safe there at all hours of the day and night.

I think Owings Mills Mall is slated for demolition, to be turned into something like up in Hunt Valley where the Wegmans is.

Ahh I remember good old Hunt Valley Mall. Shoplifters paradise. OM Mall will soon be a cookie cutter shopping center.

I work at that autozone apprently few hours before the gold place got hit some guy robbed or tried to rob the m&t right there.

Yes the M&T was robbed earlier that morning, but by a different guy. I got quite a laugh out of the story actually. They caught the bank robber like an hour after it happened. Here's his mug shot:

The injuries were NOT a result of his arrest. He looked like that when he robbed the bank. He didn't wear a mask, so the employees just had to tell the cops to look for the guy who's face is beat to a pulp. The found him walking down Taylor.

My wife and I bought our first house on Berwick after we were married in '92. I thought we'd hit the lottery it was so nice. Fast forward 17 years and I didn't even look up at the police helos anymore. I wouldn't let our kids play in the front yard anymore and only in the fenced in back with our GSD standing guard. It breaks my heart to see what a s*** hole that area is now. My wife's family bought in Loch Raven village when it was first built. She won't even go there now because it's too painful. But you know, it's Bush's fault.

I was on thr Montgomery County grand jury for 3 months a couple of years ago. I was surprised to learn how many drug arrests occur in the Lakeforest Mall parking lot.

20 yrs ago it was the best shopping in the area!! it was considered a rich jewish area and many of us who lived in Carroll Co would go there bc there was no where to shop.
Yes...owings mills use to be very nice

I don't know if you guys remember when Security Mall was a quiet place???? I saw Star Wars at the theater there back in the 70's and it was dead. It was safe to send your 7 yr old (me) to walk around and no one to bother.

I remember when Westview was the same way.
