My names Jeff I’m 33 I’ve grown up shooting random different types of guns over the years from shotguns to 44 magnum revolvers to different rifles. Anyways I’ve always wanted to get into guns especially with all the events in the world and just having a family I want to protect and as something to occupy the little free time I have at the house.

I’m trying to get into an HQL class here soon. From what I’ve read that’s really the first step to buying a pistol?

I have a ton of questions but with that being said I also know forums have search bars so if I can’t find something I’ll make a post. Just wanted to introduce myself.

    Howdy!

I'd suggest going to a 16 hour class and getting the full Handgun Permit, allowing you to actually carry a loaded pistol legally. Once you have that, the HQL is free.

    Yes, welcome!

Whereabouts in Maryland has Fate placed you, and if I may ask, from what state did you come? Just curious, because if you came from Massachusetts it's a slight improvement, but if you came from Tennessee, you got screwed.

Do you currently own any guns? Do you have a place to shoot?

If you think you may want a carry permit, it may be worth it to get that, because the HQL is then free with no additional training. There are ways around the HQL training, too.

Welcome Jeff. There are a number of exemptions to the HQL and/or HQL training. MD gun laws don't make sense, they only serve to make purchasing, carrying and everyday transport difficult for the average citizen. I agree with the suggestion to jump directly to the Wear and Carry Permit. There are multiple advantages to it vs simply the HQL.

I’m down in Calvert county I was born and raised in Charles County. I have a 20 gauge shot gun and that’s it. I have some power lines at my parents. Also there are a few ranges and places over in Charles County

I think the wear and carry would be the ticket. I was under the impression I needed the HQL to even do any wear and carry class….

Again I still have lots of research to do lol I’m pretty dang green to all this.

    Nope .

    I'll simplify it .

There is no good reason to not do W&C Class first thing .

Virtually every training provider can supply necessary handgun on request , sometimes involving a nominal fee .

Since you already grasp the concept as too which end of the gun from which the projectile exits , passing the shooting portion will be a non issue .

In the interviening 6 weeks or so , rent some various guns / accept the hospitality of MDS members to try various of their guns , so that you will have a feel for what you might be interested for your first purchase .

@JV113, welcome aboard and, the above, is QFT. This is the most efficient way to proceed.
