You can cut aluminum at that rpm with a 1/8 in diameter bit. May have to lube it. But then the problem is the overall length of the bit. Cavities on the lowers are pretty deep and getting down in there may be a problem. Also your frame stiffness may be a problem for chatter. One way to see...
ToolAA,
I took a short photography class at Carroll Community and used my student number to buy the academic version from Agisoft. That is very reasonably priced. The real problem is not software, it is taking pictures that capture the data you need correctly. For grips there is the problem...
ToolAA,
I use photogrammetry to scan 3D objects. That is where you take a bunch of pictures around an object and then a software program like Agisoft Photoscan reads the pictures and generates a 3D model. You then usually have to clean up the scanned model a bit before you export as an STL...
Wow! Thanks for all the encouragement. I am just starting to play with this stuff.
trailtoy: Not doing grips commercially yet and don't even know if it will be possible. Custom artwork for the checkering and the CNC cutting take about 8 hours. And that assumes the 3D model of the grip...
Thanks!
I use Solidworks or Blender to model the shape of the grip. Then I use Deskproto to add the checkering toolpaths and generate the G Code. Starting to do 3D scans of BP pistols stocks so I can replicate them on the CNC. Below is a STL model of a BP pistol I have scanned. Once they...
Built some custom design grips on the CNC for a friend. These are for a S&W Victory 22LR target pistol. Apparently wood grips aren't available. Pictures are as from the CNC without any finish yet.

Chatter too
Smdub is right about the stiffness needed. While deflection of light frames is a problem a greater mess is chattering. Weak and lightweight frames will let the tool chatter. And the long tool needed to get down into the 80% will just make it worse. Light passes at slow speeds...
Here in the USA when the words "Common Sense" are in the title of a law you know that is another attempt by them to come and get your guns. Different in Canada I guess. Sad day when Canada is more American than America.

Paperpounder...no problem. I was kinda tense when I started as this was first time shooting the rifle except for a few test shots when Bollingers checked out my build for me. Actually first time on a rifle in twenty years for me. It was a beautiful hot day. The tempo was kind of slow and lazy...
Yeah, I was trying to use my fingernail but that wasn't cutting it. Didn't think of the bullet tip and didn't have a tool that fit. No problem as it just means I gotta go back and shoot again. Oh darn. heh heh. Hap is a really nice place to shoot.

Went to Hap Baker today. Sighted in my pre-October AR by me and a friend slowly putting 120 rounds through it - 5 at a time. Beautiful weather. Just a few people there and the typical friendly helpful RSOs. Got the azmith right but we couldn't figure out how to do the elevation of the Mag-Pul...
I like HAP too. Polite and professional RSO. Stood by and advised me when I was shooting for the first time in twenty years using a semi-auto that had never been fired before.

Pikesville Barns and Noble has the NRA National Firearms Museum hardback on their bargain books table for 1/2 off. About $9.99. Total gun shelf space at that store is about 2 feet so what do you expect. But it is a nice book.

Can't believe all this
I am reading here of doctors telling me to lie to other doctors but do it intelligently. How the h*ll do I know where the borders are? This is BS. When I go to my lawyer I don't worry about what I tell him. He is my advocate. He doesn't put my information into a...
Engraver info
You might try Mid Maryland Engraving who is a member here. He does custom hand engraving so he has to know design pretty well. I would like to be as good as him some day.
