Realistically, a 22LR would work for bear protection.
Any loud noise is enough to drive them off.

That said, I'd prefer a wheel gun for bear protection. Powerful cartridges beat semi-autos down. There will never be any malfunctions with a wheel gun. I love semi-autos, but not when a mama Grizzly is coming at me. I have a S&W 460 magnum that I carried with me in Alaska when we were camping. Alaskan guides use that gun, but a nice S&W 44 magnum will do nicely. If you are only talking about black bears, I'd get a S&W 686 + in 357 magnum or as someone posted above, a Desert Eagle in .357 if you must have a semi-auto.
