That said, I'd prefer a wheel gun for bear protection. Powerful cartridges beat semi-autos down. There will never be any malfunctions with a wheel gun. I love semi-autos, but not when a mama Grizzly is coming at me. I have a S&W 460 magnum that I carried with me in Alaska when we were camping. Alaskan guides use that gun, but a nice S&W 44 magnum will do nicely. If you are only talking about black bears, I'd get a S&W 686 + in 357 magnum or as someone posted above, a Desert Eagle in .357 if you must have a semi-auto.

I've thought some big caliber handgun would work, but seeing this had me wondering.

+1 on the big bore wheel guns.

My 460 using 240 gr Hornady Bullets shoots a 2" group at 100 yds (I do have it scoped and I'm talking shooting it off a good shooting stick). I'm not a fan of the 5" gun, however (and 5" ain't enough for MAryland deer hunting as stated previously). I shoot an 8-3/8" barrel but might have considered the 7-1/2 Performance Center model if the right one had come along first.

That gun is a handful, however and a 44 mag (S&W 29 or 629, Ruger Redhawk or even a Blackhawk, etc) would carry quite a wallop and be MUCH easier to carry. I wouldn't consider a .357 for really big bear. Hell most 357 Mag ammo isn't even legal for deer in Maryland (you need 70 ft/lbs...and most doesn't reach 700 ft/lbs even in a 6 or 8" barrel). If I wanted 357, I would look into a 357 Maximum...but that's a reloaders caliber these days. I shot one in a Dan Wesson many years ago, however, and it was pretty sweet ...plus it was a 'Pistol Pack' set with 3 barrels (4, 6, and 10"...IIRC)
