I do not like external safeties and tend not to buy handguns that have them. I always carry with one in the chamber. I safety is my brain. Don't finger the trigger and the gun won't go bang.

    This.

In hunter safety class they drill it into your head that

"A safety is a mechanical device that can fail".

Never trust a safety. Assuming that the gun is safe because a switch was thrown will get you or another shot one day.

M&P9C, XDS .45acp or Ruger LCP. All chambered and ready for the fight. If I am not carrying in the home they are in a gun vault ready to go..... to not chamber and need the weapon, taking that last few secs to chamber and acquire target is just a disaster waiting to happen to you.

You know what? It's OK to go without one in the pipe for a couple of outings until you see that the seat belt buckle won't set it off. Or bumping the doorknob will be not result in a bang. Perfectly fine

Just curious....how many people keep a round chambered in their concealed carry weapon that does not have a safety? How many feel this is too dangerous?

The thought of not keeping a round chambered in a carry weapon is what I consider dangerous. Round chambered at all times, anything else is an expensive paperweight.

One in the pipe or it stays home.

    Agreed!

Strange thing I could swear my sister who is in the Air Force told me when carrying on base or wherever that are not allowed to have one in the pipe. Why would this be policy? To many airmen shooting themselves in the foot?

Sorta defeats the purpose if you don't.... WAIT, WAIT, WAIT.... I gotta load this thing....

Plus, what if the first round hangs up when you rack the slide and doesn't chamber? Then you have to clear a jam before you even got off the first shot. If you have one in the chamber more than likely you will get off at least one shot. Moreover, in the smaller carry guns cited by the OP he will lose a precious round of capacity. No sense in carrying without one in the pipe.

Agreed...the argument was that you could fire the gun unintentionally as you were un-holstering it. I disagreed and demonstrated my Flashbang Bra/Ruger draw....no finger near the trigger at all.
anything is possible...BUT doubtful. Typically most accidents happen holstering a weapon...at least from what Ive read in the news.

The key is to carry the gun in a proper holster. That holster should retain the gun and securely cover the trigger guard.

I will add that anyone that carries should practice/train as they would fight. If you are not comfortable with a loaded chamber then you need to be very proficient with racking the slide during the draw.

also as others said when you holster or even un-holster keep your finger and other objects away from the trigger.

some carry pistol mags loaded nothing in the chamber, chambered hammer down if applicable, and the last one chambered hammer back.

Typically I carry chambered hammer down/decocked

When I was deployed, that was the standard configuration on all major US military installations unless you had a specific exemption and it applied to all of the services. And yes, the reason was because of too many negligent discharges.

dont get me started on that hypocrisy lol...its ok for SF to carry on base for their job but another active duty military person or even the SF themselves cant concealed carry at all on base..:sad20:

Gets brought up from time to time, if your firearm is mencchanically sound, and you are properly trained, carrying with a round chambered is pretty much the only acceptable and safe method. If you are not comfortable with your firearm, or are not comfortable carrying it loaded, either fix/replace the pistol, or fix your lack of training, it really is that simple.

Carry with one in the pipe. You don't want to test your fine motor skills at a time when you will be amp'd up and you will lose some of those skills. When your life is on the line, remember K.I.S.S. ( No offence)

It's kind of hard to load a revolver while being threatened.

With a revolver, some leave the first chamber to strike, empty. Just simply another quick trigger pull alleviates that. But a revolver would be the least pistol I'd worry about "snagging" the trigger to fire. Just like a DAO pistol.

If you're carrying on you, then it HAS to be hot because tenths of a second count for that first shot.
If you are lobbing it in a back pack, computer case, etc.. Just to at least have something with you, you have already lost your reaction time. Might as well leave the chamber empty for the safety factor of the gun floating around in a bag, whether in a holster or not.
