    Howdy Folks,

I came to Frederick, MD for work a couple years back. After settling in a bit, I'm looking to purchase a few firearms (to start with) for recreation / home defense and explore the firearms community in and around Frederick. I'd love to hear some recommendations for favorite local ranges, gun stores, good FFLs (ie knowledgeable and friendly with relatively inexpensive transfer fees), etc. Is a C&R FFL really beneficial and recommended for a noob/budding collector?

    short term wishlist/shopping list:
    1) Henry lever action 22, for target practice
    2) a basic 12g (Mossberg,Remmy,?)
    3) anti-bear handgun (compact 44 or 45 ACP?)
    4) 30-06 for hunting

    suggestions?

I've enjoyed reading threads on the forum over the past few days and know I have much more to learn. Thanks for sharing your experience and opinions!

    Welcome from Frederick!

For $30 and a little bit of paperwork, a C&R license is a must in my opinion.

    Welcome to MDS :)

I don't make it that far west very often, but I have purchased from Lou at Shooter's Discount in Mt. Airy and had an excellent experience. You can check out the Industry Partners section of this site for additional recommendations - most of them have their transfer fee rates posted in the "Dealer Info" thread on their pages.

    Gunrunners in Frederick
    Glade Valley in Frederick
    Shooters Discount in Mt. Airy

These are three places you will have to look far and wide to find a negative opinion.

Skip Gun Center by Ft Detrick unless enjoy wasting time and $$$.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've been to the place near Ft. Detrick since I work there and found them to be pretty much as unhelpful and overpriced as others have described them on the forum. I look forward to stopping by Glade Valley and Shooters Discount soon...not sure if I can make gunrunners hours.

Coinboy's C&R Faq on here is great! I've got it filled out and ready to mail. Does it really have a 2-3 month turn around time?

    welcome from Spring Ridge.

Stateline in Emmitsburg carries Henry 22s

Personally, I'd also add Hafers in Hagerstown and the Gun Shack in Mt Airy to the list of local places to do business. I've also heard good things about the others already mentioned, just haven't had a chance to personally visit them yet.

Cresap is local and public, but recently cut their hours. plenty of IWLA (mt Airy, Frederick, Damascus), and private ranges available. I shoot at Thurmont and the AGC. Happy to host at either.

Thanks for the recommendations...will add Hafers to my itinerary the next time we go to the outlets in Hagerstown. I hadn't even heard of IWLA until I started reading this forum...will look into that too.

My C&R app is in the mail this afternoon...the ATF is now on the clock!
