A good .22. If I could own just one, it would be a Ruger Mark of whatever vintage, or a S&W 4" or 6" revolver.

After that, a 1911 or a Hi Power.

Which one that is depends on your circumstances, but I'd say for most civilians that would be a mid-sized, affordable, ultra reliable workhorse type.

Honestly that makes me lean Glock (!)
