Can you not swap out the mag tubes?

You would also need the matching barrels. The 8 shot ones have different barrels than the 5 shot ones. Yes swapping mag tubes takes seconds with a strap wrench. Of course the other models mentioned just have an extended tube and spring to add capacity.

If I found a cheap 500 with a longer barrel, I'd likely replace it with an 18" barrel with a matching mag tube - so that wouldn't be a problem.

I'm a Smith that prefers people to own firearms that DONT require a Smith to fix and parts are readily available. Its not very self serving but it makes for happy gun owners.

... But for home defense the mossberg is a sure bet. 500 or 590.

Also I think the 500 readily accepts magazine extensions, I think it's the 590 that requires a barrel change. Could be wrong.
