Mossberg 500 or Remington 870?

Which one is better for home defense, and why? I personally prefer the Mossberg 500 because of the ambidextrous safety.

Bottom line is flip a coin. If ambidexerous safety is important to you, that's as good a tie breaker as any.

Perfect. I figured they were about the same. The ambidextrous safety really does break it for me unless there are any other differences that I'm missing.

I'm a lefty with long guns as well, but I have settled with an 870 for sentimental reasons.

I have had 500s, 870s, Winchester 1200s and Ithaca 37s.

Whether you choose 870 or 500, you can't go wrong.

The 500 seems to win with that post. I'd rather not have to take my shotgun to the gunsmith every time there was a problem. Aside from this, what would you consider a good price range for a 500? I've heard of people picking one up at a pawn shop with a bent barrel for $50 bucks.

Mossberg 500 series has fixed capacity mag tube. The 835, 930 and 935 like the 870 have extendable mag tubes.

The safety is the winner for me (especially with a lefty wife), but as mentioned, YMMV. Go with what wows you.

Can't go wrong with either one. I chose Mossberg due to ambi safety and price/configuration/availability when I was shopping for one. Mossy has dual extractors where 870 has only one, but I've never heard of the single causing a problem.
