Well, based on my experience with my Ka-Bar in the military I purchased one for my Go Bag. Wouldn't want to be without it--

You gotta have one, you just gotta !! Actually I carry it when I ride my bike. I have a sheath that I strap to my shin. Great for keeping dogs away. I'd never cut a dog but all it takes is a jab from that point.....OUCH!!

It was a field expedient job...

It is actually easier to deploy(no sag) and cuts like a mofo...
I find the braided cable is easier to store, deploy, and it has no sag.

I like that when I utilize the hand to elbow prep, followed by a pullstart motion, the loop holds shape even with stored coiled into the smallest space. Solid wire doesn't work for that, at least not the types I've tried. If you find yourself still performing work as a professional cheese slicer, you have my number. I'll make you one to try.

Piano wire is superior to both. Everyone has their favorite key though.

Tried a thinner piano wire but it still took kink and set. I can coil the cable around very small mandrel for concealment and it has almost no memory for it. I can also use a slimjim to insert the cable, handles off, inside a belt (two layers of leather, made for this purpose). Have to take.the belt off at the metal detector anyway and they hand it right back to you after you walk through. Cable also goes inside zipper shields on your pack or laptop case. They expect those areas to have metal.
