If you don’t live in Maryland then an M1a
I like the Mossberg predator rifles- they use SR25 mags, M1a mags, and Mossberg mags.
Don’t forget about the M1A in 6.5 Creedmoor for Marylanders!

M1A would have been my 1st choice,, even if it was breaking the proposed "Base Grade Gun" budget.

    So,, AR308,, Basic but reliable.
What lower?, Upper? or just buy a "pre built" ?

If you could "only have one" I would choose an accurate Howa bolt action. It would be the most practical and get the most use. It would get expensive feeding an AR10.

either RPR in 308 or AR-10 Windham. I saw a flat top one a number of years ago in NH for less that $700. Dangit.

Although there are better and probably cheaper, I love my Ruger Precision in .308
You shoot it well. That's what matters.

To OP, I'm a huge bolt gun snob so of your two listed options, I'd vote for the Howa with "range fun" being the intent.

If you plan to use it for "social purposes" in some nebulous future, I'd change the vote to a basic ar308 variant.

Just to show you why I like my boltguns, this is what one of mine (happens to be a 308) does.

I have a Bergara B-14 Ridge bolt-action rifle in 7mm-08 but I think a 308 Win model would also work well. Very well made and accurate. Has a threaded barrel and is a good suppressor host.
Have the 308. It’s only weakness is me.

    I said "Base model AR308" :)
Money is tight on a "Non Needed" rifle
I completely understand. I answered your question based on what I would do, with and without a bunch of money. The Ruger, I still stand by, for a bolt action rifle. Otherwise, I would definitely just build my own AR-10. Not skimping (too much) on the barrel or the trigger.

    Or…..

Sell the ammo, and buy something you really do want
