Years ago I ended up with a bunch of 7.62x51 and ,308

So now I "need" a .308 rifle, Though I have no immediate use for one

Howa bolt action or base grade AR308 ?

AR-10/308 for the versatility alone. If just a range toy or hunting rifle, the bolt action. You can target shoot, hunt, defend with the AR.

Similar situation. I ended up with a Ruger American Predator with the pmag conversion, and a Henry Single Shot. Finally settled on the Ruger and dropped the Henry in the classifieds.

That’s a tough one. At present I’m up to

Late 70’s Rem 700 BDL w Rob Barrett action bedding and 2-lb trigger

Ray Parkinson built Natl Match M1-A

Rem 700 ltwt fluted carbon stock 16”, etc (feather lite!)

    Springfield Armory M1-A Socom

    something I’m forgetting (geezus) Ah!
DPMS G-II MOE (still trying to get this one down to acceptable 2 moa … :-(

I would say, gun face me and I’d choose the 700 BDL but, in the end I know it’d be the M1-A Natl Match Parky built, for me.

I would go with an AR10, but out of MY current 308 rifles if I had to choose one to keep, it would be my 308 Vepr.

Typical MDS lack of reading skills, OP gave two examples. Howa bolt action or base grade AR308. It’s just me, but I’m reading this as an English as my first language speaker/reader, and I’m thinking he has two pretty specific choices in mind. I’m NOT reading “what is the coolest or best 308 rifle he could aspire to get?” But away we go......

BTW, FN SCAR 17 is the answer to that ;)

I have a Bergara B-14 Ridge bolt-action rifle in 7mm-08 but I think a 308 Win model would also work well. Very well made and accurate. Has a threaded barrel and is a good suppressor host.

At one time I would say the M1A…now I say the AR-10. The platform is ubiquitous and the manual of arms is extremely well known…it’s very modular…magazines such as the P-mag are inexpensive and easily found.

The attributes are many and possible disadvantages are few.

The M1A is a superb rifle…no question and can still perform with the best of them…but practically its day has passed unless you plan on doing some bayonet fighting or butt stroking someone.

Of the two original chopcies, AR-10; of what I would recommend, M1A SOCOM or Scout Squad for a semi-auto, or Remington 700 SPS in bolt gun.

Depends on your envisioned "use" case. I'd say one of your choices is better for hunting, and one is better for self defense. Neither strikes me as being great for target shooting. For that, I'd want a heavier barreled bolt gun, or a better AR10 barrel.

Perhaps you didn’t read the title of this thread. Asking:

Yes I read the title, but I also read his entire post where he specifically mentioned his two choices. I don’t reply to threads based solely on their titles.

If you don’t live in Maryland then an M1a
I like the Mossberg predator rifles- they use SR25 mags, M1a mags, and Mossberg mags.
