    Some upper receivers are "thermal fit" which means the receiver needs to be slightly heated up before a barrel will fit into the receiver extension. You can't use that tool on thermal fit receivers. You run the risk of breaking the receiver.

    The reason for the tool is to square up the face of the receiver extension to the bore of the receiver and barrel extension. In doing so, accuracy is usually improved.
