You can get a better upper by building it yourself, if you do it right.

Yea just gotta do some research on barrels and if gas blocks matter with brand and all that. I’m just stuck between 10.5, 11.5 or 12.5 for the 5.56

Stay away from aluminum gas blocks and castle nuts. Use steel.

With a short barrel, I'd recommend a SLR adjustable gas block.

SLR blocks are the standard that everybody tries to copy. The copies aren't really worth it. I'm running SLR adjustable blocks on everything I can.

they had a great price on the Faxon hvy fluted barrel at the time.

Some upper receivers are "thermal fit" which means the receiver needs to be slightly heated up before a barrel will fit into the receiver extension. You can't use that tool on thermal fit receivers. You run the risk of breaking the receiver.

The reason for the tool is to square up the face of the receiver extension to the bore of the receiver and barrel extension. In doing so, accuracy is usually improved.

You want to use the Aeroshell grease. It will prevent galvanic corrosion from occuring between the steel barrel nut and aluminum receiver threads.

Well, if you're spending under $200 for a barrel, you probably aren't doing yourself much good(but you still are), but if you are spending upwards of $350-$450 on a barrel, it's foolish not to.
