I’ve had this off the shelf (read inexpensive) pellet rifle for almost two years now…it’s a Wally World special Crosman Shockwave .22 that I have spent little time with. The “two stage” trigger is laughable but the real thorn in the side was the lack of usable irons and a plastic scope that flat out didn’t work. I took advantage of a Black Friday deal and have a Vortex Vanquish 3-9 and some rings coming for under $100! Usually the scope alone is a $200 item. For pellet rifle purposes, this will cover the bill.

I truly don’t think there is hope for the trigger more then learning it. My recollection…long semi un-predictable mush through a stiff first stage. No discernible push through the wall for that first stage other than a squishy pressure that you can sometimes miss entirely and break a shot a smidge too soon. Oh well. I need something to do in the backyard as it gets cooler and my activities get closer to home.

If I have any progress, learned behavior, or insights, I will be sure to share.

Any idea which pellets it likes best? I've had a few that were surprisingly picky.

Check youtube if you haven't for trigger solutions. I had a Nitro Venom from them which I put a roller bearing into the trigger. Made a huge improvement while still totally safe. Yours may be able to take the same mod for a little bit of your time and a $1 or so part.

Oooh excellent idea thank you for that tip!

Ammo? Honestly last I remember it really liked the basic off the shelf stuff (larger tin, red top, might be regular Crosman or Daisy)I have some euro pellets, I’ll have to take some pictures and compile what it is I’m trying to do when I have an optic that will work. Some may know I deep dive on things and if it doesn’t work right, I’ll tinker with it.

Just ordered some 5x8x2.5mm bearings. That trigger job looks simple enough! Really appreciate the recommendation. Thank you.

I could have sworn I had three different H&N flavors but I must be mistaken. I haven’t tried the terminators just yet, though I have higher hopes for them after looking at the weight. The “premier” crosman’s shoot well at a little over 14gr. The target pellets I think are too light. I was getting super erratic results with them. Could have been the optic failing as well. I’m curious to give them another go. Scope should be here next week with the bearings arriving Thursday. I’ll do the trigger mod fairly soon after receiving the bearings.

Made a quickie little pellet trap today after work. Wood was all scraps from the job site, and the stall mat I had as well. It’s a real tough, hard wearing 1/2” thick rubber. Think horses. I have 12 square feet of it and this little 17x15.5” piece won’t be missed. I know I have some small hooks somewhere in the “stash”. I’ll screw them to the front top strap for target hanging. Small enough to make a neat hole in paper so it’ll hang free.

I went ahead and removed the front sight and rear, barrel mounted sight. Now, I am NOT one to leave a screw hole open without a blank. Have tools, will tinker.

I screwed both in to their stopping point. Next I took a hack saw and made one, rear pulling, cut on each screw just above flush. Grasped each in a pair of needle nose pliers and cut off the bolt heads at the line. Next I sanded and smoothed out the rough edges, then took my cutting disk and cut a single line down the center of each. Wah-lah! Grab your small screwdriver and screw in your new blanks. You can go to the length of bluing if you like.

Front site removal? Took same hacksaw and literally cut the block off. Next came sanding with a palm sander.
Finished with 3,000 grit in the hand. Sand in-line with the bore so you don’t see any scratches.

    Cool now you’re a flat-top!

    Subtle…

Bearings arrived late last evening. I’ll do that trigger mod today after work, glass is set to arrive today as well. So, provided timing works out, should be zeroed today as well!

I don't know your particular rifle but, for most with mushy triggers, there is an easy fix. That is to remove the trigger adjusting screw and install a longer screw. This will allow you to adjust the sear closer to the break point and does away with a lot of the mush. For Spanish air rifles, the screw is usually a M3x7 .5 thread. The crosman trigger is different though.

    This may be of help.

Anyone shoot heavier .22 pellets they can recommend? Much Obliged!

    - Brent

My experience with springers is that they don't do well with heavier pellets than the 14.3 gn Crosman Premier. I have tried all sorts of JSB, H&N and RWS and non were as good as the Crosmans. If you are looking for accuracy rather than FPE, you can go lighter as sometimes the 10-11 gn pellets will be more accurate.

The issue I’m fighting is zero at 25y (my farthest range). They’re blasted high and the scope is maxed. I know the answer is shoot farther…just trying to do anything I can

I have a couple of questions for you. 1) is the Vortex scope rated for Spring Air Guns? 2) How many break in pellets have you shot?

My reasons for asking is that Springers are notorious for breaking scopes not rated for spring air actions and Springers usually need 200 to 300 pellets down range before they settle down.

Then there is the Artillery Hold which is another can of worms altogether.

I haven't had much luck with heavy for caliber pellets in things.

May need to shim the scope, but that seems like an odd thing here. Shouldn't need that. Rings good? Secured?

I also have the concern John has about breaking that scope if it is not air gun rated.

Well heck we’ll just have to wait and see. This rifle has always shot high. Hence the desire for a “better” optic. The air gun rating isn’t something I’d considered. So, time will tell there I suppose.

    I’ve shot probably 300 through it I’d guess. I’m
Having a lot of fun anyways! On that target. If I am wanting to hit the third target, I hold down between targets 4 and 5. Center of that dead white space with my reticle lined up best I can. If new optic is required, well then we will! Happy to document my foibles and successes!

Brent, you seem to be a handy guy so I think you can make some shims out of soda cans. Here is a video on how to shim your scope when you need more adjustment.

Seems straightforward enough. I don’t know why I didn’t think of it. I had to play with shims on the staff of my tang sight for my Sharps…duh! I appreciate the little nudge in the proper direction there, John.

Don’t drink any sodas, but my wife has beer in the fridge that has been there since summer. Don’t reckon she’ll miss one .
