    This is the way.

If you’re really bent on a semi-auto and want something nicer than the average 1911 and it’s in the ballpark of your budget, it’s tough to go wrong with a Dan Wesson. I have two in my collection and although they were expensive, I have no regrets on either. I own the Valor and a Silverback.

    This is the Specialist.

If you want something a bit more traditional without a rail, check out the Valor.

    Damn you, trick.
You're gonna end up costing me money with that post. Drooling over that Valor, big time.

LOL! It's a heck of a pistol, and I waited a LOOOOONG time to get it. First I saved a bit of money here and there for quite a long bit, and when I finally had enough, I was able to place my order directly through CZ USA. It was 2020, so production was hit or miss due to Covid, but finally, they shipped my pistol....

Only for me to be told by my FFL (prior to the removal of the model number requirement on named models) that he couldn't transfer it to me because DW had given the Valor a new model number when they re-introduced it in 2020, and that model number wasn't on the silly MD Handgun roster. :sad20:

So I had to petition the board to have it added to the roster, but they only meet quarterly. I ordered the pistol in April, it was delivered at the end of June, but I didn't get to take it home until mid-November.

But yeah - I think Dan Wesson does a great job of hitting the sweet spot between price and quality - they have no MIM parts, and the fit and finish of those guns is really nice. The slide is like butter on both of mine, triggers are crisp and clean with just enough pull weight, and so far they have gobbled up every round I've tried in them - Ball, 200 gr flat points, 200 gr lead semi-wadcutters, 185 gr HP - they just don't care.

When I was a kid growing up in the country, I loved old single actions. A single action Ruger .22 would be my first choice. A Colt or Colt style (Uberti) in .45 would be great when he reaches his mid teens. The old S&W K frame revolvers are nice too.

I know I had a couple of posts above about nice 1911s, but honestly, this would be my choice. There's just something really cool about a classic revolver like the Colt Python.
    Or my other possible suggestions.

I know these are lowly non fancy shooter type pistols, but a decent .357, 44 mag were 2 of my essential hand guns.

My choices were a Ruger GP100 and a Super Blackhawk. Several choices of barrel length available in each too. Ruger also has some pretty sweet looking Vaquero and Bisley revolvers too.

Not as pretty as the Dan Wesson 1911's that trickg suggested but darn good weapons.

I'm a big fan of Ruger SA Revolvers - I have two Blackhawks and both are fine shooters. Those are, IMO, heirloom quality guns.

While I'm fond of revolvers by Colt and S&W, I think a CMP 1911 would be the go-to.

You could pick up other guns at 5-year intervals; be a nice coming of age present.

Why? If you're going to buy a 1911, at least buy a new one where you know exactly what you're getting, and you don't get one that's been worn all to heck back.
