    Congratulations!
As soon as I read the title a colt 1911 is the first firearm that came to mind. Then seeing that you don’t own a 1911 it seems like the obvious choice. If not that I’d get the hottest new gun of his birth year.
Yup I’m leaning this way. 1911 because I don’t have any in the collection and his grandfather was in Korea. I mean a 1911 from that era? What would that cost me? My mom would be proud honoring her Dad and her Grandson at the same time. He did pass down to me two shotguns and a revolver that I literally touch each time I open my safe.

    Wow, that's some pre-planning.

Take your time and find one that you really enjoy to shoot and use a lot. No rush to find it -- he'll understand.

He'll appreciate that fact long after you pass it along to him.

Meanwhile, congrats on your soon-to-be arrival!
I want to shoot and enjoy the gun before he’s of age to receive it. I’m in the early stages of planning for sure haha. At least I have the budget set. For some that’s the hard part. I definitely want something worth passing down and that I currently don’t have in my collection. I want this piece to be special and memorable. All the guns passed down to me by family mean so much. Priceless really. I’m sure everyone here can relate. I hope I can create that feeling for my lil man like my family members did for me.

Hmmm lots of love for the Colt Python. I do like the 6 inch over the other offerings. Is that the most common barrel length?

Any chances you would like an Anaconda instead of a Python? Again , congrats on the new baby on the way.

That specialist is really a clean lookin 1911.They both are worthy of passing down for sure. It’s within my budget I think. 1800-2200ish MSRP so I’m sure I could find a worthy FFL here willing to do the transfer…any takers? Where did you go for yours? I don’t mind a drive because it’s for my boy!
The FFL I used on that transfer was Cindy’s Hot Shots in Glen Burnie, and I’m glad I did because they held the gun for me until I could get it added to the MD Handgun Roster- they didn’t even charge me a storage fee although I think they probably could have.

Question - CZ USA offers a fantastic Military/First Responder discount - do you qualify? That’s what brought the Valor down to a price point that I was more comfortable with when I was trying to decide what 1911 I wanted to get.

I'm not a 1911 fan, my P226 was my first.
FN High Power is an updated classic from a great company.

A CZ 75 or variant would be a lot of fun at the range.

    Nice pistols!

I have a P226 Mk25 that I like a lot - it’s a fine pistol and if I ever need a SHTF gun, that would be it, but it doesn’t have quite the same allure for me as a well made 1911.

I think regardless of what you go with, it should be all steel or at least all metal. A polymer frame doesn’t scream family heirloom to me.

A nice revolver is always a good bet for something fun, different and special in todays age. If buying new, the Colt Python sure checks a lot of boxes. Or an older Smith. Or a New Model Ruger Blackhawk Flattop.

For a 9mm that is a cut above, I’m a fan of Langdon Tactical Beretta 92s. Has some of the classic Beretta looks with nice improvements. Buy one from them to get their trigger job. It’s a G model so decocker over a safety. You can spruce it up with their NP3 parts as an option.

I would suggest a Colt Diamondback. He will be able to use it much sooner than most of the other larger caliber models suggested and it is a classic/beautiful gun.

Engraving. Ok now we are talking. If I choose a 1911 I like having all that space plus that commander is exactly a classic look to pass down. I would do initials or just 2024/24’ for the year. Damn good idea I do appreciate this concept thanks
Yep-- there are many quality aftermarket 1911 grip suppliers you could do engraving on the frame and custom grips. Perhaps his grandads service dates in Korea and branch of service...possibilities only end w/your imagination. it's just too easy, looks sharp, and makes it a one of kind heirloom for generations to come.

I didn't know the gun was for the baby till teen years of the youngster. I thought it was for the OP UNTIL the child is old enough or he inherits it in the will.
I think it's for dear old Dad - he's using the birth of his son as an excuse to buy a new gun, ostensibly so it can be passed down one day as, "I bought this gun for you right before you were born." :D And that's perfectly ok - I know I've come up with some creative reasons to buy/build guns too.
