I FINALLY got my AK out to the range today. I am not a fan of the Galil handguard. It also feels like my pistol grip is slightly loose. Other than that, it was a blast to shoot.

I did have one problem though. My groups were tight at 25 yds (indoor range), but they were all to the right, and slightly high. The height could be my fault, but I have no idea why my groups would be to the right. After I finished my second magazine, my groups came down, but were all still right. Any suggestions as to what I can do to adjust this?

IIRC the proscribed method is to hold the gun by the stock and give the left side of the barrel a moderate whack against a tree.

That should adjust your group to the left.

Get an AK windage and elevation sight adjustment tool. They can be had for arround $10.

To raise the shot group, rotate the front post in the down direction.
To lower the next shot group, rotate the front post in the up direction.
To move the next shot group to the left, drift the front sight with the tool to the right.
To move the,,, ahh you know what is next:D

    Thanks guys.

I'll be looking for one of those adjustment tools today. I'll have to stock up on ammo for a long day at Elk Neck.

Question #2: I've been looking at optics mounts for my rifle. I see a lot of the mounts depend on the rifle having a side rail on the receiver. I don't believe this version of the AK has that rail. Am I wrong, or do I simply not see it? I googled "AK-47 side rail," but all it comes up with are the optics mounts.

The IOI's don't have the side rails. I have one ;) I don't know why they advertise that they do, but they don't. I'm looking at the ultimak/ aimpoint option. The other one is the LaRue Iron Dot....monetarily, that's a cheaper option.

I know this is a really old thread, but I tripped into it by looking for rail solutions for my IO AK. I figured I'd add in something I found for the sake of others wandering the 'net for solutions.

Leapers makes a replacement receiver cover that has a rail mounted on it. Midway sells 'em:

I just found/ordered this last night, so I haven't tried it, but I'm hoping it'll be sturdy enough. In theory, it should be "ok". We'll see how tight it fits... Hmm...

edit: I just got pointed to this as well:

I have Drill and Tap side rails at the shop. I install them all of the time.

Other option is w beryl style top rail.

The dust cober rail mounts dont hold zero and the forward mounts like ultimak make cleaning not so easy, and they eat up any kind of red dot optic except Aimpoints

Yeah, found that option a day too late... ;)

Well, time to use Midway's return policy - again. :)

Thanks for the straight info, my bad for not checking first.

And again, thank you for the straight info... The cost of return shipping is my cost of being lame. I'm usually a pretty dern good researcher, but it was late at night, I got excited at "finding a solution", blah blah blah. :)

Okay, so I see that DHP did two Beryl mounts:

    http://dpharms.com/berylstylescopemount-p-230.html
    http://dpharms.com/akberylstylescoperailwquickdetach-p-1000.html

I'm okay with not being able to pull it off quick, and with losing the iron sights. In my new-found wisdom, I've found folks talking smack about the rear mounting point, and saying that it's not reliable in terms of tweaking it down hard enough to keep things solid.

    Any ideas?

    _thank you_ guys

I heard that these AK's don't particularly like double stack mags and only accepted single stack mags? Any truth to this?
At this point I can only speak for cycling snapcaps (i.e. not firing) and mine is fine running with double-stack mags. It'll be out on the long range for it's first firing this weekend and I'll know more then, but I haven't seen anyone complain about double-stack mags.

ETA: I just noticed WA as your location, thats a long way from MD my friend. :D
I was waiting for someone to call me on that!

Like I said above, I tripped into this thread 'cause it was one of few talking specifics about putting rails on an IO AK. I know you're a local family, and I don't mean to intrude, just wanted to share some info - which has turned out to be a bit sideways. :(

I'll be on my way soon.. And (not to overstate it, but...) I do appreciate the info. I thought I'd be giving, though it seems that I'm getting schooled. :)

You guys are gonna make me weepy... :)

Okay, full range report coming as long as Seattle doesn't get nailed with another below-freezing cold spell this weekend! It'll be only iron sights this weekend, but I'll be sure to flesh out GA's worry about double-stack mags.
