Thats what I'm worried about, especially in a kayak
Bu but they are unsinkable.

Says the guy who was on the bay reaching for something in the center storage area of my Ocean Kayak Trident when an ass in a go fast boat flipped me over. The yak didn't sink sink but it was floating like a telephone pole and I had to hang on to it until the wind and waves blew me the lee shore.

I do a damn good recon before I ever open that hatch on the water from then on. :D

Nice. What is that jig head?

Shaky head. I’m honestly not sure what brand it is, and it’s not one I prefer. It was really windy and the smaller ones that I like to use were making it too hard to feel bottom. Luckily I have a few of these kicking around in the tackle box and they worked.

Went out after work with the family, catfish and white perch. Stopped on a beach and found this Partial ax head and knife

Fishing trip on the Potomac River today. Launched from Ft. Washington and fished the main river area mostly. The fish were very active around 10am - 12pm on the last couple of hours of the incoming tide. Water temp was 62 at 10am and warmed up some during the day. Water clarity was very good. Used a rattletrap all day.

Had hoped to do a little smallmouth fishing on the upper potomac today but the 25mph+ winds made that a pita. The channel cats are biting good though

    Falkus, yep!

Still no big mommas yet, but finding enough good ones when it’s not super windy.

One of my best friends bought a fishing kayak to kill some time while in between jobs. The first thing I told him was buy a good life vest and never take it off while on the water. On his second trip out in 55 degree water he leaned over too far and flipped. It took him a little while but he made it to shore. When I told him about the vest he joked and said he was a good swimmer and it was silly. The first thing he did when he got back to sure was to call me and thank me for saving his life. He said there was no way he could have made it to shore with all of his clothes and boots on and in cold water.

I used to have an ocean kayak 15' model and those things are built for speed and not stability. I fished once in the heavy wind and had to ride it like a horse with my legs in the water while dropping the line. I have since switched to a Ride 135 and lots out there like that built for stability.

Kayak people need to learn self rescue. They even make a strap that looks like a horse stirrup you drop in to help. You reach your arms to the far side and pull you upper body on top the kayak and then rotate on. If you try being in the water and pulling from the side you just flip the kayak. YouTube has videos on it.

No one should be in a kayak, in cold water with out protective gear. I own waist waders and a semi dry top. A lot of bay fishing guys that are serious have dry suits. Cold water on muscles is proven to just make you loose coordination after 5 minutes, 10 can't move, and by 30 dead even with a life preserver.

Being from MoCo, I always preferred launching from Leesylvania State Park in Va. It's just across the river from Mattawoman. Plenty of parking and you can buy yearly passes there.

I am thinking of trying my hand at blue cats from shore. Anyone have any suggestions for places to try once they move into the shallower waters?

I've seen some recommendations on baited bottom rigs with floats/rattles. Anything else? I used to catch freshwater cats pretty well with a worm lure, or just about any crank lure really. Cats were always hungry until the snakeheads ran em out.

How do you cook those things? I've drowned em in butter and lemon but damn the mineral aftertaste of fresh water fish kills me.
Honestly I don't eat them. I don't have the patience for all those bones but Wifey will pick through them like a surgeon. That said, a bit of old bay and a bit of lemon juice and into the toaster oven they go.

found the cut offs for VA tribs:

Virginia tributaries up to the following demarcation lines:

    • Accotink Creek: Rt. 1 Bridge
    • Aquia Creek: First bridge above Aquia Harbor Marina
    • Chopawansic: Rt. 1 Bridge
    • Choptank: Causeway
    • Dougue Creek: Rt. 235, Mt. Vernon Memorial Parkway
    • Four Mile Run: Rt. 1 Bridge
    • Hunting Creek: Rt. 1 Bridge
    • Little Hunting Creek: Rt. 1 Bridge
    • Neabsco: Rt. 1 Bridge
    • Occoquan River: Fall Line
    • Pohick Creek: Rt. 611 (Colchester Road)
    • Potomac Creek: Rt. 608 Bridge
    • Powells Creek: Rt. 1 Bridge
    • Quantico Creek: Rt. 1 Bridge
all other areas would be reciprocal
