I wanna go fast
For $500 the VZ or a used Mini-14 are his best bets.
What about the supposed "gremlin" with the trigger reset or whatever it is?Go with the VZ
He intends to pick up a couple shotguns in addition, but wants a couple rifles too.

I think he just decided he was behind the curve and is playing catch up. Wants one for each member of the family.A couple of shotguns and a couple of rifle...all at once? Is he focused on quantity, or does he have an interest in quality? Unless there is a pressing need to fill his safe, I would (and did) pick up one quality piece at a time. Over 35 years, I've never regretted a single purchase, I mean investment, that I've made.

He currently has one revolver - a Taurus .38.

I still stand by my Mini 14 recommendation, but several folks have mentioned .22lr rifles and I think thats also an excellent idea.
a basic Ruger 10/22 with polymer stock is always at the top of my list for SHTF.
A SHTF rifle should be reliable, but all machines break. Go with an AR platform for readily available parts. Even when SHTF.

Problem with building is that he would have to build a pistol at this point (unless an 80%). I don't think that is what he wants.
