Received the StealthArms 80% 1911 Tactical frame today, and I am pretty impressed. Well packaged, and no dings anywhere on it.

Have order a finished slide & barrel, as well as all of the lower parts earlier today. Can't wait to start working on it. :)

No idea, and was really just looking for a project that I can use mostly for .22lr and occasionally .45. Started playing with the jig a bit, and it seems like the slides cuts will be much easier than I thought. Might take longer too, but definitely easier.

If the weather holds out, going to get a cheap drill press and vise tomorrow.

I'm confused! In the pics you posted yesterday the frame had M1913 rail cuts and no slide rail cuts

The pics today show a frame with no rail cuts and the slide rail cuts are already cut.

    Is my mind going? :banghead:

And it was much shinier :)

Two frames from same manufacturer. Doing the regular government frame first as a test run. The one with the tactical rails will be after I get this one done. Bought the standard frame unfinished, and the tactical one bead blasted. Polishing looks like it will be a pain on the unfinished frame. Should have spent the extra dollar and had it done too.

And this one didn't have slide rail cuts yet, just the hammer and sear pin holes drilled:

It was just gunk on the frame.

Here it is in the jig after the first few cuts for the rail:

and here are the shavings on the cutter:

    And when finished:

    Barrel Seat is next:

Enough playing for the day. Have to clean up and then start shoveling the driveway.

That looks pretty slick. I might have to go this route, to build a 1911. Thanks for posting, pilotguy299.
I want to do this really bad but definitely don't have the mechanical aptitude.

Not that hard so far. Have to cut the barrel seat, but that will have to wait until the weekend.

I am a mechanical moron, so if I can get this far I am sure you can do even better!

You can't be too much of an idiot if you learned to fly (although the army taught a few idiots over the years). :lol2:

From your first ground school to what ever ratings you have, you were taught about the machine that you flew. From instruments to engines, wheels to flight controls, you were taught about mechanical things.

You were also taught about a light touch on the stick or yoke, and how to make infinite small adjustments on instruments, trim, fuel flow and air conditioning.

Now take those skills and apply them to that chunk of metal and make it sing. ;)

    Regards,

    John

I think I am going to start building 1911s too. They seem to be a hell of a lot cheaper in regards to parts and tools than building AK pattern rifles.

I found a place that will sell a stainless slide with a fitted stainless barrel, and all of the parts for around $655. Should be here next week.

I was bored last night and took the slide off of my detonics mkvi and put it on top of the frame. Looks damn pretty:

I am amazed at just how close the slide rail cuts were to match the mkvi slide. It's not perfect as it binds a bit at about 2/3's of the way on the frame, but damn close to not need much work to make a perfect fit. But that is going to wait until I get the slide that is on order.

    Can't wait...

you should wait until the actual slide that is going to go on there arrives, and then do the lapping required, you may be taking off material that doesnt need to be removed by lapping that other slide against it.

You are correct, but I have no patience! I took the micrometer to it and the rails are still a bit bigger than spec. Probably why the slide fits better to this, than one the detonics mkvi it came on.

I am not going to worry too much if things aren't exact with this trial run. I will be going slower on the next frame, along with much shallower cuts.
