Just more cushion for the pushin...
Your weener better be attached to an oil derrick, because that deposit is way too deep for the average guy. I’m not talking chubby, I’m talking “oh, that’s where my 10mm socket went” fat.

What are they tightening up? This is a background check, not a subjective assessment of the purchaser's Good and Substantial Reason to merely purchase a handgun.
About a year ago they sent out a bulletin about the occupation answer needed to be more specific. Shortly after I started getting the occasional 77Rs returned.

But why? What is their justification for even asking the question?

It's a background check, not a proof of Good and Substantial Reason to merely have a pistol in your sock drawer.

I just got notices of this thread being resurrected. This explanation is in no way meant to be a defense of anyone or any government agency.

MD law states that MSP must collect occupation when purchasing a regulated firearm. People were putting "healthcare" or "military" as their occupation. MSP was audited by the legislature and got dinged for accepting such vague occupations. At first, MSP didn't tell anyone about this and was rejecting applications for some occupations and not others. We now know the real story and haven't had anyone rejected since.

And... it is not your dealer's responsibility to make sure your application is completed correctly. If you can't figure out that your occupation is not "government", then that is your problem.

MSP has kicked back three 77R applications to us for errors in occupation. One was “entrepreneur”, one was “government employee” and the other was “none”. They said they weren’t descriptive enough.

The applications are sent back to us and a we must contact the applicant to get a more descriptive occupation. We the. resubmit the application, contact MSP on the dealer live help chat and ask them to modify the occupation field of the application. It is uncertain how many times this will happen.

Chuck, forgive my dense mind. When I read the title then opened your message up, I realized that I was using a different definition of Occupation than you and the MSP. I was feeling oppressed and went down the road similar to when Germany occupied France. With the Socialists doing their best to occupy the USA, I was thinking that they were making more inroads at restricting or abolishing our 2a rights and making the 77R obsolete. Thanks for the heads up on the forms getting kicked back.

So the problem isn't MSP, it's <SURPRISE> the Legislature.

Hard to understand how or why this sort of information would be necessary to judge whether someone should be allowed to own a firearm. I suppose if someone were honest enough to put down "illegal drug dealer" that would suffice for rejection, but beyond that, I'm at a loss for any rational reason.

Of course, "rational" doesn't mean much in the MD GA world. Dogpiling irrelevancies for the sake of annoying the potential gun owner is sufficient reason for them.

It's a hold over from the G&S days. Unless and until challenged in court, the application can have any question or required fill in the blank field the legislature wants. Do you own a dog? Number of fingers on your right hand ...

You just can't put IT. You need to put Software engineer, help desk manager or something like that.
