SHORT easy drive from Balt, Wash, NoVA, Hagerstown, Chambersberg, et al.. Might be a good excuse for an overnight, with a visit to the casino? We need Y O U R help filling the line so please spread the word. We want this to be a regular event at this GREAT facility but we gotta make a good showing!

I don't know if this will work into your schedule, but we are doing an Appleseed late in November which will be open to centerfire rifles.

Saturday would be spent doing the basics at 25 yards and we'd recommend a rimfire for that part (don't be hesitant about asking for a loaner if you need id - we're all friends here) but we will be shifting to 100 yards (our maximum) for the centerfire rifles on Sunday.

Registration info for the November event (the October event is rimfire only) can be found at the following link: http://appleseedinfo.org/search-states-location.php?locationid=544&id_event=3020

    I hope this is helpful.

On the second day (Sunday Nov. 30th) which is centerfire, can we bring an AR-15? Would that be appropriate?

I just got a slot for the Bowie Appleseed. They are listing a preference for WWII centerfire as a lead-in to the Bulge shoot in December. I'd like to win a slot for that one if possible so the question is: What do I bring in the WWII category for centerfire?

    Here are my options:

    Inland M1 Carbine, fixed stock
    Lee Enfield No.4 Mk.1
Yugo M48 Mauser (variant of Kar98K)
    Mosin-Nagant sniper
    Mosin-Nagant 91/30
    Mosin-Nagant M44 carbine
    Steyr M95
    Swiss K.31
    M96 Swedish Mauser

My preference is for a Mosin or Mauser since I have a lot of ammunition for each and can afford to burn a few hundred rounds through them. Next up would be the Enfield and M1 Carbine but I'd need to order 500 rounds to maintain my current stocks if I shoot them. I'd love to use the M96 as it is a pre-98 rifle and would be representative of a neutral reservist rifle. But it is an antique so round count matters here.

For rimfire, I can shoot .17HMR or .22LR. Both Savage bolt guns. One is scoped (.17HMR) and the other is single shot with micrometer peep sights. Both are serious tack drivers.

    Advice?

I have a personal bias to the M1 carbine. All in all, a semi will be easier than a bolt but either will work.

For rimfire, bring whichever is mag-fed. Working the bolt will slow you down significantly... however if you are also having to feed each round manually I doubt you could manage the timed portions.

Scoped is definitely a little easier, but a good pea shooter with irons will get you to rifleman just as fast. It's way more about the shooter than the optics.

My biggest recommendation: practice at home. I didn't make rifleman my first time out, but it came easy on my second Appleseed. I do a little "rifleman's yoga" a few times a week now that I've realized the importance of being able to fall into position naturally. It takes practice. Definitely listen to what the instructors are telling you to do. It won't feel natural, it won't feel comfortable, but once you find that sweet spot where everything comes together your consistency will increase dramatically.

Thanks. I'm quite comfortable with my .17HMR and I do have 3 magazines for it. I can get more if there is a recommended number.

An AR would be appropriate. I would suggest one with iron sights or a scope. A red dot may be difficult to use.

Thanks. I'm looking forward to testing my AR at something more than just an indoor range. I was disappointed that the Fort Meade Appleseed distance shoot got filled up before I had an opportunity to sign up, but now this offers a good alternate option.

Yes. I sincerely doubt that you'll be the only AR on the line.

When we do one of the WW2 Memorial shoots at Berwyn, we ask that people use some sort of period-appropriate rifle, but that doesn't apply to the Appleseed event.

I hope to see you on the firing line! :party29:

Thanks, I'll be there: on day one with my Ruger 10/22 and on day two with the custom AR-15 that Clandestine generously assembled for me. I know the AR is better than my ability, but I'll do my best.

Maryland has her 200th Rifleman! HUZZAH!!!!

At the Sanner's Lake Ladyseed this past weekend, Melinda earned her patch. She is the 200th person in Maryland to have done so. It is fantastic to welcome her to our still small, but rapidly growing ranks.

Appleseed Maryland has been enjoying fantastic growth and success. Thanks to all who have come out, and to everyone who has supported the program. We'll save this nation yet!

So- who's going to be number 300?

We had a great day on the range in Waldorf today. Thank you to the instructors for spending their time with us.

I am very proud of my Nephew, Pate. He fired a perfect 250 score AQT today!
