How can an employer check on the legal status of an employee candidate?
I understand they can give a Tax ID, Green Card and SSN card.
How can an employer look up to see if any or all of these are legit?

When I worked for a local logistics company a few years back, my employer did a search through a government website. Not sure what the site was as I was not allowed that information but we ended up firing 40 people based on its findings. I believe the site verified social security numbers against names given.

Once you file payroll taxes for the first time, if the SSN is not eligible for work (e.g. it was issued based on a student visa), you get a 'no match' letter from SSA. You are then obligated to follow up.

There is also a way to sign up for 'e-verify'. This gives you a way to obtain the 'no match' letter at the point of hire. Not sure what is required to sign up, it seems to be mostly done by bigger employers.

As long as the documents presented to you look genuine to the unaided eye and fulfill the requirements of the I9, you are in a 'safe harbor' as an employer, at least until the 'no match' letter shows up.

The greencards are quite sophisticated and difficult to forge well. Look up on the USCIS website for what features have to be there.

Won't work anymore. They will now walk up to you casually and ask for their free Obama care card and get out of deportation free card. Thanks Obama

Why would you want to? MD is a sanctuary state. Baltimore is a sanctuary city.

I am pretty sure every chicken and crab processing outfit on the eastern shore is also a sanctuary of some sort. As are most sub-sub-sub-contacted state construction projects.

    Get with the program....

Oh, and Trump is a racist.
