I don't own a Glock because the ergos didn't suit me - just personal preference. I have a Sig P229 9mm, Beretta PX4 9mm (F), and S&W Shield 9mm. All are great shooters. No reliability issues with my PX4 with both FMJ and Federal HST JHP, after about 400 rounds.

My dad has the PX4 storm.
With the safety off, grab the top of the slide to sling shot the round into the chamber. Now did that safety digging into your hand feel nice? no it did not.
The vids He saw had you push the slide lock down but do you really want that to be the only way you do it comforably?

He got the XDM 6 months later which is what He had been looking for when he settled on the PX4 storm. He's actually range shooting the XDM better. I sometimes shoot his PX4 at the range and I do just fine with it. I like night sights though. 3 dots are easier to me to aim.

I'd suggest looking at an exploded parts diagram for whatever guns you're interested in before making your final decision. One day you'll decide to start popping pins out on a whim. ... some guns take a LOT longer to put back together than others.

Okay, you do have a point there. The only thing I DON'T like about the PX4 is the sharp (and sometimes painful) safety.

I made my decision in track record. Far more LEOs and soldiers around the world use glocks than use berretas or anything else. Plus, for $550 they are a steal.

    I'd love a 92, but that wouldn't be my go-to, that's a glock 17.

I commend your choice and reasoning. My 17 is probably my favorite gun of all time and made me very Glock loyal. Just ordered my fifth Glock yesterday.

Again I want to thank everyone for their input. It was very helpful finding the gun I liked to shoot without making an impulse purchase. I went to the range yesterday and shot a M&P9 and loved it. I shot it side by side to the Glock 17.

    - I loved the way the M&P fit my hand, its was comfortable to shoot.
    - I wasn't a fan of the M&P trigger, it felt very long and the reset was to release the trigger out all of the way. Researching the gun, this is a common complaint. Regardless of that I did shoot it well.
    - My pattern was lower left of center, which indicated trigger pull issues from my online research.

    - I liked the Glock trigger better, it felt easier to shoot but I did not shoot it as well as the M&P. No idea why. I went through a box of 50 9mm per gun, shooting groups of 10 rounds per target and 50 rounds per gun.
    - I didn't like how the Glock felt in my hand comparing to the M&P.

Overall I chose the M&P and ordered a new in box nine for 416 off of GAG. The range I was shooting at had the same gun listed for 589. I would have rather purchased the firearm from the range but they were not willing to go down on the price. I wasn't asking for 416.

Again thank you everyone for the information in this thread, I hope someone else also finds it helpful.

Everyone should own one Glock. They are rock solid and relatively cheap.

I would agree if glocks fit every person.

Do not buy a gun for the brand buy the one that fits you comfortably. There are many flavors of gun try them all out before making a decision. Buying a gun because it is considered this or that is dumb. The more comfortable the gun is in your hand the easier it is to train and practice with.

I read about those before the purchase but there are so many damn options for APEX. I have to read more. I see a trigger kit and a reset pin, to give you the click. Not sure what I exactly need but I'll figure it out.

You do not need to do all. I would recommend doing a piece at a time until you get it where you like it. THe main thing is the M&P trigger itself is sloppy I would recommend the following,

Either one of the triggers below will get rid of most of the over travel inherent in the M&P trigger one is aluminum and the other is polymer.

Don't know if OP has already purchased but I would support a wheel gun for first handgun purchase. Simple and functional....and no I don't own a Tupperware firearms....

When seconds count, the police are but a scant few minutes away.

If you need to go bang every time and it matters, Get a Glock.

My Gen 2 G17 with the stock magazines has never failed me once. NEVER.

Do not get the Storm. The Maryland State Police were forced to use them, had lots of problems with them, and were glad to get rid of them.

Some women think they would prefer a smaller gun, because smaller looks a bit less intimidating. However smaller guns are more difficult and less pleasant to shoot. The difference between a Glock 17 and a Glock 19 is entirely in the barrel length and grip length anyway: both sizes have the identical terrible ergonomics.

Many people, especially those with smaller hands, find the Glock to be boxy, bulky, and generally a very bad fit for the human hand. There are guns out there with MUCH better ergonomics. Try the S&W M&P, the Springfield XD/ XDM, and the Walther PPQ/PPS before you decide.

I have small hands and oddly short fingers and thumbs. I have trouble getting my finger positioned correctly on the triggers of many guns (especially DA pistols) without twisting the pistol slightly in my hand. It is important to have the barrel in line with the forearm if at all possible. Many people with smaller hands are not physically capable of getting a correct grip on many handguns.

In my experience, the much-ballyhooed "interchangeable backstraps" made fashionable by the S&W M&P, and copied on the Gen 4 Glocks have little or no effect on the problem of trigger reach for shorter fingers. I have two M&Ps, and the different backstraps really don't make any difference as far as trigger reach goes.

I cannot reach the magazine release on a Glock without twisting the gun significantly in my hand. Further, the standard Glock mag release is so flush with the frame that it's even harder to press. The first thing I did when I got a Glock was to put an extended mag release on it. Some people carve out the plastic behind the mag release button for the same reason. That's all you can do with a Glock.

The S&W M&P has a reversible mag release, in addition to MUCH MUCH MUCH better ergonomics overall. I have reversed the mag releases on both my M&Ps so I can drop the mags with my trigger finger. That works for me. The M&P gives me the option. The Glock does not.

The Walthers have true ambidextrous mag releases, I believe. That's even better. Of I were buying today, I would seriously consider the Walthers.

Great post and good advice. If buying primarily for home defense then stick with full size gun. Your wife will probably end up liking it more when it comes to handling it and recoil. Having said that, don't rule out other beretta models like the 92 FS as well as other handguns mentioned above.

I'd go with the glock over the beretta, and I'd go with the 19 over the 17

Almost everyone who gets a glock 17 or glock 22 ends up wishing they had gotten a glock 19 or 23, and end up there eventually, after another purchase.

Save yourself some time, get the 19. If you ever get a carry license, it is not hard to conceal, and it just feels better.

To add to that, you can get grip extenders for G17 mags to fit in a G19 if you ever want the extra couple of rounds. Ditto ones for the G22mags in the G23. You do lose about a half an inch in barrel length, though.
