I voted other, you can't just have one.
    I started out with a 30-30 when I was a kid.
    Now:
    2-30-30's (1 Marlin, 1 Winchester)
    32 Win. Sp. Winchester
    45-70 Marlin
    300 Savage
    22 Mossberg
And I haven't even scratched the surface yet!

I voted 30-30 because you can take down just about anything you can hunt in MD with it (up to a small bear).

There is no reason not to go with a .357 though. The ammo is cheaper, there is less recoil, and you can take down a deer with it.

Hope things get better for you. I voted 357because of hand guns in 38/357. but, listening to you, I'd say a 22 is in order, Henry, Winchester, or Browning. not sure of how easy the Brownings are to disassemble/clean.
I'd also vote for a new Winchester 357 '73, got one and love it, or a Henry 30-30, have one and love it.
    Good luck!

    I voted .357.

.22 in a lever is a blast. A super fun plinker. Almost impossible to shoot without grinning.

That said, its recoil is almost non-existent. Step up to something a tad heftier and you can get the same grin, but with a bit more satisfaction for the trigger pull. .38 or .357 can give you enough feedback for that.

30-30 is for if you want to DO something, like ethically hunt deer. You'll get fewer cartridges into the tube, so it's not as joyful to plink with. Pricier to shoot as well, I think.

    So, .357.
