    What was the answer?
not sure you're going to get an answer (other than those offered already in the thread). This thread is from 2013 and the member you quoted hasn't been seen since 2014.

    What was the answer?
Several different answers. Buying from a dealer has been for a while. Bought my first one (from a store) in 1982 and it was a thing then. Sometime in the early to mid 90's all private sales had to go through the MSP. Since 2013 poor saps moving to Maryland are supposed to register their handguns when they become residents.

Thanks, a friend of mine told me I didn’t need to register it if I bought it before 2013. That didn’t sound right

Not to gratuitously be That Guy , but a lot more details are necessary for the context of that sentence.

1996 was when ( essentially all ) handgun sales/ transfers required the Permission Slip/ Paper trail .

It had applied to Dealer purchases since 1966 .
