    Apparently in the 70's that's what you did to C&R rifles to make them "cool".

    That was what you did from 1920 ( with first influx of post WWI surplus Krags and various Mausers ) thru 1970's .

    The heydays were the '50s and '60s , by the '70s it was dying out . It was a matter of the price of surplus rifle , plus cost of drilling and tapping , and bolt bending was close to price of used commercial bolt rifles . Those who still did at that point were building custom rifles on purpose , instead of just cost effective hunting rifles .

    Remember , back in the day , milsurps were dirt cheap . It wasn't until mid to late '80s that surplus rifles reached the pricing of new rifles .

    Circa 1982 , S&W Victory's sold for about 1/3 less than comparable used S&Ws .

    Good point - I don't know exactly when he bought that rifle; could have been late 50's early 60's.

    But pack to the OP - that is a really interesting specimen you have there! Learned something new today.
