Essential rifles currently available for cash-and-carry to Maryland residents:

.22 semi-auto (Ruger 10/22 - be prepared to upgrade parts/stock as you get familiar with the platform)
    centerfire handgun-caliber carbine (Beretta CX4 Storm in 9mm; M1 Carbine .30 caliber)
.223/5.56 semi-auto (Ruger Mini-14 may be the best non-AR option
    large-caliber rifle in a comfortable action (1903 Springfield bolt-action in .30-06)
    12-gauge shotgun (Remington 870)

    Just my $.02

Some may laugh, but I have an old Remington 760 and I think everyone should experience a pump action 30-06. It's a different kind of fun.

My Dad has one. I worked up a sub-MOA load for it using IMR 4350 and Speer 165 gr Grand Slam bullets.

    Nice hunting gun.

I'll get an older Winchester pump 22 one of these days.

If you find a used Taurus Model 62 rifle (Winchester clone) for sale, they are really good. It's one gun that Taurus didn't screw up, probably because Rossi made it for Taurus.

    Every REAL man has a 10/22. :)

If you do not, you need to turn in your man card. :)

    Good luck with that one.

I got a manlier .22, a 40+ y.o. Marlin Model 60. A .22 so manly, it's completely secure in it's ability to stay as it was (aside from a scope) from the factory. ;)

The 60 was so plebian. You need a Marlin 99C. :)

10/22 are just too inexpensive and fun, that everyone should have at least one.

And it takes a REAL man to play with a Barbie. :)

In our climate? SKS. Good semi rifle that can be used for hunting or self defense.

I also own one so I might be biased.

No, you have to count. If itholds more than 10 bands, it is banned in MD. You have to go out of state to buy 20 or 30 band models.
