Anyone have any insight on the current most cost effective trolling battery (non Li)? My AGM gave up the ghost after 5 years (was on a maintenance charger, but is dead, as in completely dead 0v, no recovery trying to trick on a dumb charger with a good battery attached). Group 31 size.

I don’t know much about AGM batteries. I just stick a couple of Walmart Everstart Group 29s in every 5 years or so. Probably not the best but seem about as good as can be expected for about $120 or so a piece.

I know you mentioned non Li batts but I need to put my .02 in here. It may save your back. I used Group 29 and 31 batts for years. Even the top of the line usually died in 5 years even when on a top of the line smart charger.

I bought a RELION LifePO4 battery and never looked back. Yes it is more expensive but it weighs about 18 pounds and you get 100 AH out of it. My research shows that many of them go for 10 years before given out and you can run them down to shut off without damaging the battery.

They give more range or higher power settings for longer times, plus the piece of mind of not worrying about getting below 50% charge and shortening your battery life. Oh, and about carrying that 75 pound load or 2, fuggetaboutit.

Until they spontaneously combust 1000 feet from shore, melt a battery-size through the hull, the boat sinks in 20 seconds and I have a long swim while fully clothed.

    Jk

I’m getting ready to buy a small freshwater boat running only a 12v/55a motor and will be buying a pair of Diehard Marine Group 27 batteries.

The Relion 100ah batteries are ~$1000 x 2 = $2000 in batteries. A pair of Diehards at about the same AH are ~$500 for the pair, but are larger and weigh a lot more.

It can really depend on how much you use it. Also if you have to move it in and out of a boat regularly.
I have ONLY used the regular maint free Deep cycle and got 3-4 years out of them but they were about $500 for 3 of them.
They are heavy as heck and in one boat, I don't mind the extra weight forward as it helps stabilize the boat. I only have to pull them in the winter. I just had to get 3 new ones last week. If I was able to fish as much as I wanted, I would invest in better batteries. What I have spent has served me well.

If you research them, they overheat when being charged not in use. Most of the cheap models don't have a good controller on them and thus, they light up.

I have no problem using them in a kayak or canoe. I don't think I would use them on a boat with a engine charging system.

I believe statistically, its the cheap crap that burn up in charging. I have not heard incidences of the more reputable brands designed and marketed for marine use burning up in charging. I frequent an offshore boat forum and this discussion is hashed out over and over and over again.

Ever look at these guys? Decent pricing for U.S. assembled LiFePO4s. They run smaller and usually at least half the weight of AGM.
That's a good price. I would research them well though.

I've talked with the owner and also exchanged e-mails with him. They're out of CO and have a couple of their batteries for a year or so. They also sell on Amazon for usually the same price but got a discount which wasn't advertised. PM if interested.

Also have this one with BT for same price.

Replacing deep cycle batteries every 5ish years is the cost of doing business. We have three on our Jon boat and the dates codes are all spread out a few years so every few years we replace the oldest one with a new one.
I’m not convinced there’s much difference brand to brand. They all seem to be the same level of mediocre.

You can thank the EPA and the government for the poor quality these days. They would like to see lead disappear from the face of the earth completely if they could. :mad54:

I got 2 100ah lithium ion batteries from amazon. Paid $300 each. They have come way down in price and most of the chinesium ones are comparable to the $1,000 plus ones. The only feature mine doesnt have is it will let you charge it below freezing which is apparently bad.
I have yet to run one dead too. On lead acid I would go through 3 sets of batteries on some days. I dont have the problem now I can go out all day on electric motor only lakes and still have %50 of the battery left when I get back

Getting ready to change out my golf cart batteries with lipo and matching charger bms to go with them. Upfront cost is more but longevity is so much higher. Added benefit of less weight. I save almost 300 lbs switching from 6 8 volt lead acid to Lipo batteries.

If I were to Still have my revisor boat it would be lipo. Weight less then my 6 gallon gas tank
