    • The U.S. Army is on the verge of retiring the Vietnam-era 5.56-millimeter caliber bullet.
    • The Army believes the older bullet has insufficient range, armor penetrating power.
    • The new bullet and gun combination will shoot farther, penetrate thicker armor, and weigh less, likely involving new technologies to help the service reach its goals.

Um, where have you been for the last few years? old news. the round has already been developed.

The round is called the 6.8 fury. Sig Sauer makes the rifle. Vortex makes the optics.

Considering world events the last few years and the increased potential of more armed conflict involving US forces…it makes me wonder if it’s the best time for a mass changeover. The transition may overload the logistics of doing so at such a time of uncertainty.

Of course…there’s no “best” time for it. Just wondering…that’s all.

The gooberment needs something more effective at possibly exterminating those of us who dare criticize it

And the article was from 2019 . Any fresh major developments ?

The concept of ( cartridge larger than 5.56 , significantly lighter than .308 , with range capabilities close to .308 ) has been kicking around the Military , think tanks , and firearms R&D community for decades .

At various times and stages including : Specifically replacing SAW analogues . Various thoughts to what extent SAW replacement could also fill role of GPMG . Saw replacement , plus partial issue of dedicated long range rifles for individual Infantrymen , or SAW replacement , plus general issue rifle .

It's too much of a hassle to switch ovsr to those new fangled metalic cartridges . Shut up , and give more contracts for paper Minie ball cartridges :) .

Since 2019, yes- round and rifle have been developed and appear to be well on their way in the testing/evaluation process.

It already exists and is called the 6.5 Grendel.
The Grendel is an extremely efficient cartridge. It doesn't have .308 energy, but it has the range and is extremely low recoil. I'm glad it is finally gaining traction in the shooting community.
I'm not sure why it doesn't have the military's attention.

Not Invented Here , plus supposedly it's not well suited for belt fed .

Is the new Sig harder to fire with invisible mags or invisible belts of ammo? That is impressive!
