I've been trying to figure out what the firearm is. I think that it might be some sort of punt gun. Any genuine ideas?

Yep. The little boats were developed to carry guns of this sort back in the days of commercial waterfowl hunting. The object was to get close to one of the (then) huge flocks of ducks, geese, or swans while they were on the water, and slaughter many dozens of them in one shot. The guns were secured to the boats by heavy hemp ropes(in a V configuration) that absorbed most of the recoil. The boat itself absorbed a good bit.
