I love the Iowa class battleships. I always thought, at least the USS Missouri should have been kept active at least as a ceremonial ship, like the Constellation and Constitution.

iowa Ain’t going back into service. She was looking pretty bad a few years ago. And the one forward turret that blew out barrel still has a plug barrel. Would not function properly without major work. Which folks probably wouldnt be able to remember how to do these days

As a side note, the DOD is a primary investor in the American black powder industry.

when Goex was about to be discontinued, dod made investments. they needed to ensure domestic BP production for the armament industry.

Within the last few years all but a few replacement barrels for the Iowas have been destroyed…recycled in politically correct terms. The few that survived have been allocated to museums…including one or more installed on the Missouri at the time of the WWII Japanese surrender in Tokyo Bay.

Those surviving guns were only saved by a write-in campaign by citizens…all were scheduled for destruction during the Obama regime.

Maybe they'll deploy off the Somalian coast and pulverize the anti ship launchers

After the Vietnam War I met a veteran who was all in favor of foreign aid to the North Vietnamese. He said we could recommission all four Iowa class battleships and they could cruise up and down the Vietnamese coast sending 16" care packages all day long.

As a matter of fact...the Houthis are certainly deserving of such foreign aid as well.

One barrel is still at Dahlgren.

...and another outside in front of the Navy Museum at the Washington Navy Yard, where they were originally made.

During summers in college, I worked at the Navy Yard as n engineering intern. I was absolutely fascinated by the history of the Naval Gun Factory which built ALL of the big guns for the Navy, as well as other interesting projects, like the lockworks of the Panama Canal!
