I remember going to those seashore gun fights. Afterwards, we'd walk through the sand or sawdust. I was absolutely thrilled to find the empty .22 cases in the sand, because they were from *a real gun*!

    Exactly!

We probably went once a summer (that was my only demand as a kid). Between watching them 'drown the witch' and the gun fights, what a place!

Anyone remember Frontier Town outside Ocean City MD?

When I was a youngen, probably around 7 or 8, I remember being picked to do the 'gun fight' outside the saloon. The cowboy gave me his revolver with blanks, squatted behind me and steadied my arms as I fired 6 blanks at the 'outlaws' which was also comprised of children with adults behind them. :screwy:

I would be curious if they still even have the gun fights now a days or if thats a no no. :(

I used to LOVE that place. Gunfights in the street, train and stagecoach robberies, panning for "gold." One year we managed to hide the gold from the robbers on the stagecoach. Another year, me and another kid had our cap guns and "shot" the bad guys. We came up with the plan while in line and didn't tell the adults. Everybody was shocked when the bad guys played along and "died."

Have you seen this article about "celebratory gunfire" in the Sun? This dim bulb thought he was firing blanks in the house, but shot his granddaughter! Hard to believe sometimes.

I think the point of the OP's story is not to rehash the rules of safe firearms handling but to address the title of his post. YES, just as some people aren't responsible enough to have or raise children, operate motor vehicles, or drink alcoholic beverages , there ARE some people who have proven that they should not have guns......

am I the only one doing the math on how an 82 year old has a 17 year old great granddaughter? Give it another year or two and he'll be able to shoot his great-great granddaughter.

Back in the 80's there was a guy in a tv show with a model/actress. He put a gun to his head as a joke. It was loaded with blanks but he was killed when he fired a blank in jest. The expanding gases were enough to cause a fatal wound to the head. If you want to play with guns, make sure it is a pop gun.

Jon-Erik Hexum. The show was called "Cover Up".

    Enough said.

Oddly enough I'm one of those "first time buyers" at least according to if MD is concerned. It's been absolute ages since I fired a firearm...I was single at the time. ;)

Also, this is a known phenomenon... the Dunning-Kruger effect, or "Unskilled and Unaware"

Short version: people who have no clue what they are doing overestimate their ability.

This is what happens when you shoot something twice a year, New Years and 4th of July and keep your ammo in a Crown Royal bag.

They still do these, we were there 2 weeks ago. IIRC, the show you speak of is the OK Corral where they pull 10-12 kids up, split them in half, and fire the blanks at them. We caught the end of this show and as we walked in half of the "shot" kids fell down and played dead.

Brandon Lee, son of Bruce Lee, was killed by a blank-firing pistol. Blanks are NOT safe! Firing a gun in the house is never "safe" even with blanks.

It was a different actor who shot himself that the wad penetrated the skull.
I saw the TV special on Brandon. They filmed a close up of the gun scene with rounds that were supposed to have no primer or powder. The prop/stunt guy left one with a primer. The primer squibbed a bullet into the revolver's barrel.
Then when they filmed the shooting scene with Brandon, they had blanks. The blank propelled the bullet lodged in the barrel into Brandon. After the investigation, they changed some of the safety measures stunt people went through.
I think the first rule for stunt coordinators was to eliminate crown royal, mad dog 20/20 and ripple from the set.

"I think guns are necessary for people who know how to use them," Basket said. "If you don't have a way of protecting yourself, police are not going to be here to give you help."

Me too. This guy doesn't qualify.

Back when Six Flags in Largo was Adventure World I used to work in the Wild West Stunt show.

We constantly did training regarding gun safety with blanks. We also coordinated the gun fights so that even when "shooting the bad guys" we still aimed the guns 20 degrees upstage of the actor.

There are also different stage guns, some have the open barrel, others are drilled for the gas to escape 45 or 80 degrees from the barrel direction.

We had one guy not fire the shotgun during the show but later walked into the small dressing room withe loaded and armed weapon on his shoulder. Being a dork he popped the shotgun off his shoulder and fired both barrels into the ceiling. 10 min later when we could hear again we noticed the 8in hole in the ceiling.

    He was fired.
