Those white line spacers look like the 1970s to me.
I got mine for Christmas in 1975.

My dad would cut a piece of white plastic milk jug to use for spacers.

As an aside, there is a tang sight that will fit, Marbles makes it and Midway has it. Even with just one screw it fits tight.

Even though its sold, figured I would clarify for any other Marlin 39A Owners out there.

It requires the Marbles extended tang screw that goes with this kit (sold separately).

To install...
unscrew the four tiny screws that hold the sight to the base
put the base where you want it on the tang (it has two screws but only one is used)
secure it with the longer tang screw, when it sits flush in the base and in the tang its just right
reinstall the sight and put in the four tiny screws

It took me about 15 minutes being overly cautious.

Getting gun parts on Marlin guns is almost impossible. I tried to buy an extra tube feed for a Marlin 22 rifle. I was told by ruger, who bought out Marlin I m guessing about 5 years ago that, they pretty much no longer any Marlin firearms before their acquisition.
