So I would assume most people that shoot 5.56 use an AR15. I do. I know Ruger makes an American Ranch in 5.56 which is a bolt action. What I don't know is what can the Ranch do that the AR15 can't? Why would someone buy the Ranch? I don't think to many people hunt with 5.56 but maybe I am wrong.

    Some prefer bolt action
Can load long OAL heavier rounds singly in a bolt (if bbl has twist rate to stabilize)
    Quieter suppressed
    Lighter
Probably more accurate for the price.
    Doesn't look tactical.

It doesn't look "scary" to the libs and it is a good price. I've been looking for one and if the one in the classifieds was posted just a week earlier, I would have jumped on it. If only if I didn't go on that buying spree.... darnit Atlantic!

Some people like to have both actions bolt and semi.

Also some states have laws that semi auto rifles cannot be used for hunting, but any manually operated rifle is allowed. Pennsylvania is one of those states.

Suppressing a bolt action is not as picky of ammo either.

It’s a good varmint rifle. I have no use for a 5.56 bolt gun, there are better rounds.

less regulations on bolt guns (some states don't allow hunting with semi's; all the 'evil features' rules and regs in some states). most can shoot bolt guns more accurately though there are some super-accurate semi's. load longer and heavier bullets vs semi's that have limitations on magazine size (length) for longer range shooting.

less ammo costs as less tempting to just blast away!

Wouldn't that have to be a big varmint? To me a good varmint rifle is a CZ 457 in 17hmr. But I am no expert when it comes to varmint hunting.
Sure. That works fine. Everyone has different preferences. .223 is a very common varmint round.

just mainly hunting regs like others have mentioned, I can use 223 to deer hunt in PA but "whoa that gun can cycle itself that's illegal" so my AR is just for plinking when at home while I have 5.56 Henry pump action for when deer hunting

Well from what some of you are saying I guess the bolt action 5.56 makes a pretty good varmint rifle. I learned something this evening.

Several reasons including but not limited to:
-your local laws ban AR-15s but you want a 5.56
-using subsonic ammunition with suppressor and don't have to worry about cycling issues or action/exhaust sounds
    -you don't like AR-15s
-you can't shoot worth jack with AR-15s and prefer a Mauser-esque action
    -you have a Mauser fetish

If it's a gun, I kinda want it.
I have a savage 10/110 varmint that is a hoot from a bench. I also have ARs.
I also find myself wanting a bolt gun in 7.62x39.
    I have a problem.

I have an Ar15 Carbine and a Mossberg MVP. Both in 5.56 cal.
I'm taking both of them on a Pig hunt next month.
My AR has a custom trigger designed for 3 gun, but it sucks for precision shooting and with a 2 MOA red Dot I'm comfortable with head shots at 50 yards.
The MVP has a great trigger for hunting and a longer barrel. I'm inside a nickel at 50 yards.
The MVP uses AR mags which is a plus, I'll have a 10 round mag on the hunt.
The Hornady ammo I'm using chrono graphed at more than 3400 fps in the MVP.
Yes, there are reasons for both.

I lean towards rifles over pistols. I just enjoy them more for some reason. I don't have a lot but I have talked myself into a Ruger LC in 5.7. Not sure why. I do like that caliber although I am not sure about the intended use for that either. lol. Kind of falls in between the 9mm carbine and an AR15.
