I found this while researching information regarding the adoption of the .30 Army cartridge and the arms associated with it. The thesis does however include small arms discussion up to the m-16 weapons family.
I was particularly interested in finding out about the early smokeless trials and how well the Krag performed.
Kind of long but a good read for persons interested in that sort of thing.

Damnit! From the title, I thought you had some rifles and carbines that we’re orphaned and needed a good home

It is a good read. Never could understand why the Army Ordance Board bought the 30-40 Krag but this provides some very good insight.
