If possible, I'd do at least 7, possibly 8 rounds at each charge weight and then average it out for MV.

I typically don't have a chrono to use, but when I rarely do have one available, I like to do a minimum of 5 to 6 rounds at set charges for MV tests.

That's just me though, I'd rely more on the experienced guys' opinions when they chime in, I've had too many 'fun' days on the table/range to give sound advice.

    Think about it

If your manual lists the caliber, powder and projectile you are planning to use, then it can only be a problem if you jump right to the max load...which is an incredibly brave (stupid) thing to do. Assuming a modern firearm in good condition, I personally start about half-way between the min and max loads and make up only a few rounds.

I chronograph the first shot and, if it's in the normal range, try one or two more. If these work OK, I load a series of half-grain steps up to 90% of the max and test for accuracy (smallest group at the range where I intend to use them), starting with the smallest increase.

I watch the chronograph for unexpectedly high velocities which indicate excessive pressures...and check the case heads for flattened (or worse, blown out) primers. When you see one of these STOP!!!

My experience is that the groups start to open up well before I hit the 90% range.
