Hello I am new here. I just got my HQL and I am waiting on my W&C. I never thought I would be purchasing a firearm, but it’s getting bad out there even in places that violent crime has never happen before. I want to protect my family at home and outside the home. I been looking at the Smith and Wesson M&P9 Shield Plus for carry. I heard you can still buy it but they won’t let you purchase the 13 round mag that comes with it or some sellers can put something in the mag to keep it at 10 rounds. Can anyone give me some details on this? Or do you recommend another firearm for carry? Thanks for your help! I am finding it frustrating that criminals can do whatever they want, but law abiding citizens have so much red tape.

Some mfrs (or even some of the dealers) either offer restricted 10rd mags for states like ours, or pin them to prevent more than 10rd capacity. You are always free to travel to a neighboring free state and buy the proper standard capacity mags for your protection. ;)

    Welcome to the forum!

    Welcome from Davidsonville.

Many manufacturers have different SKU's for guns with 10 round magazines to accommodate people in communist states. Look on the manufacturers website or on Gunbroker.com for the SKU for the 10 round model and then ask your dealer to order it.

Protect, under Maryland law you may purchase standard capacity magazines out of state and legally bring them home to Maryland.

Purchase of the firearm itself goes as mentioned above.

Don’t try to make sense of gun laws in MD.

    Welcome to MD Shooters.

Welcome. I just purchased a shield plus. If you get the model that comes with a 13 round mag and 10 round mag, most dealers will "modify" the 13 rounder to only hold 10. The 10 round mag is too short in my opinion and leaves nowhere for your pinky finger. You can find 13 & 15 rounders out of state.

I purchased the Shield (Regular Model, not the Plus) and I also purchased a Glock 43X. I prefer the 43X over the MP. I suggest you try and shoot them along with a Sig 365 before purchase. Perhaps find a Range that rents handguns. Don't get too caught up in capacity over function. A 6 round revolver can be a fine carry model as well and you don't have to jump through hoops to purchase. Whatever you get make sure to practice with it often. Good Luck, Be Safe

A good rule not already mentioned: if you wouldn't go to a place without a gun, you certainly shouldn't go there with one. You may soon have iron on your hip, but common sense and frequent checks of your six should prevail. Welcome aboard.

Excellent advice. Carrying really requires a lot of responsibility and doesn't make anyone invincible.

Welcome from Pikesville! Sticky provided accurate information. Others may correct me, but I believe you can also find an FFL that will pin them, then take those magazines out of State and pull the pin, and bring them back in State. Downside is you wouldn’t be able to sell or transfer them in Maryland that way. Never hurts to have extra mags, so recommend just keeping the 10 round mag and buying standard capacity out of state as others have mentioned.

    What everyone said about magazine.

It quickly becomes a Ford/ Chevy/ Dodge/ Tastes Great/ Less Filling debate without end debate about most favorite/ most best-est handgun . A Shield & variants are fine guns , and quite suitable for your purposes.

If you * like * the Shield Plus , no reason not to be so equipped.

FWIW- I gave an ( original) Shield to my Daughter, for when she doesn't care to pack her .357 Magnum , so you can take that as a Biggfoot Seal of Approval .
