I can't tell you how many Remmy 1100's I've seen fail at 3 gun competitions; just in one match I saw 4 different people with 1100's have cycling issues. (that being said, I do have an 11-87 Premiere that's been 100% reliable, but I keep it very clean.)

I have an FN SLP Mark 1 that's been 100% reliable, but it's only got ~2000 rounds through it, so far. (I think it's under $1K)

It's like anything else, if you don't maintain your equipment it will fail. Take some clapped out 1100 with the original 20 year old o-ring, don't clean it, or feed it junk Wallyworld shells, and it will fail. If you do even a moderate amount of maintenance and use decent ammo as it sounds like you do, it will run just fine.

Given the way the average shooter maintains their gear, and the tendency to use cheap ammo, half the people could F up an 1897 pump.
