Yes, can be and should be. I had Browning that I had probably 7K rounds through, safety never on once.
Shouldn't even be a safety on a field gun in my opinion. If you need it safe, break it open, that's the way our guns lay on the ground if messing with the dog(s) or taking a piss or something.
I think most "field" models have this "feature" whereas the sporting models do not. I was going to remove it off my 686 as well, but I haven't decided since I have some thoughts on taking it out in the field at some point.
When shooting skeet with my Ruger, it just became part of my ritual: Step onto the station, load and close gun, snap off safety, shoulder gun, adjust glasses and hat, and pull. Get into a ritual and the safety is not an issue.
