I had mine changed on my Ruger about 15yrs ago. Sent it back to the factory to get some other work done and had them change it to manual safety.

Yes, can be and should be. I had Browning that I had probably 7K rounds through, safety never on once.

Shouldn't even be a safety on a field gun in my opinion. If you need it safe, break it open, that's the way our guns lay on the ground if messing with the dog(s) or taking a piss or something.

If it's open, no one is getting shot.

A gunsmith should be able to disable it pretty easily and cheaply. There are even model specific tutorials on the 'net for DIY'ers.

I think most "field" models have this "feature" whereas the sporting models do not. I was going to remove it off my 686 as well, but I haven't decided since I have some thoughts on taking it out in the field at some point.

When shooting skeet with my Ruger, it just became part of my ritual: Step onto the station, load and close gun, snap off safety, shoulder gun, adjust glasses and hat, and pull. Get into a ritual and the safety is not an issue.

It's a PITA on a clays shotgun. Annoys me to the point I'll quickly switch to a different shotgun.

I wouldn't disable it for a field gun. Different ballgame.

I guess I'm lucky, I've never had a problem switching between auto and non- guns. As JHE said, it becomes part of the ritual for that gun.
