I just bought my first revolver, it's a .357 Ruger GP100. Is there any reason, besides crud build up, that I can't shoot .38 Special rounds through it? I just want to make sure that it won't mess up any mechanics.

    It's absolutely fine.

I shot about 4,000 rounds of 38 Special through my Model 65 .357 Smith back when we carried those at work. Most of that was dirty reloaded wadcutters. Never a problem.

keep in mind the .38's will be shorter than .357 so the fouling will start further back (29.3 mm compared to 33 mm). If you go to shoot .357 later on without cleaning, it could make sticky extraction. It's not a big deal and a bore snake in the range bag to pull through fixes anything that may pop up with it.

Great point, beat me to it.

To the OP, I love shooting .38 through my 6" GP100. It feels like a little cap gun! Even better, the long barrel gives plenty of space to burn up powder from a .357, so you can light off some prodigious blasts and turn some heads at the range if you've been shooting .38 for a few cylinders. :D

I think the GP100 can shoot the +P rounds as well, not sure though. I called Ruger to ask if my Security Six could use those rounds, and they said yes.

I've heard some here say the shorter round eventually causes wear on forward end of the cylinder, but i haven't seen it in my .357, and I've short hundreds of .38 SPC.
