Some girl from Howard created a pretty cool idea for gun safety in the house. It’s a like pressure pad and an app called “My guns been moved”. I guess you keep the gun on the pad (hopefully in a safe) and if your gun was removed you get an alert to your phone immediately that your firearm has been moved.

Love the innovation here and the girl says there’s no tracking etc.

While it’s probably not gonna stop a lot of stuff it’s outside to box safety thinking that doesn’t any real infringement with safety in mind.

I’m sure y’all will come up with some ideas i didn’t think of why this sucks but i give the girl credit for her outside the box thinking.

Where'd i put that George Castanza meme?

It sounds like a good idea for a handgun bedside safe. Set the safe on it and you can tell when someone monkeys with it.

I guess someone could benefit from it. As for me, a pistol is on or with me and everything else is locked in safes. I feel that's secure.

Ok. So you are out in Vegas banging hookers, doing blow, and throwing away the kids' inheritance. All of the sudden you get an alert that your "gun has moved", now what? Good luck dialing 911 for your hometown from Sin City. You got nuthin'(except maybe herpes 5-7 days after you leave Vegas).
Wireless camera gives you video and pictures.

You have to be careful where the camera is. If it's in Vegas with you, don't leave your laptop at a computer repair shop.

Videoing yourself in Vegas is about the dumbest thing I have ever heard. And then calling 911 when you get herpes just tops it off.

It will provide false security. Someone will use the pad as their only security. A majority of people are just dumb.

I agree, but now you have video and still can't call your hometown 911.

Of course it’s not the end all to be all of solutions but i like the innovation. Yes a camera with motion alerts would be better blaster but that also shows how far removed you are from having little kids. After 2 days I’d ignore the motion alerts cuz my kids are everywhere. This product isn’t for me cuz my guns are all super locked up but someone will benefit from this.

I dunno. A wireless camera pointed at whatever you want with motion sensor on does more.
I have a motion sensor in my gun room and if I am not home, I get an alert if motion is triggered. Zero reason for my kids to go in there if I am not home. My wife would rather my guns don't exist, so she almost certainly isn't going in there. If we all aren't home, well the cats don't have access to the room either.

Bedside lockbox, ehh. I trust my kids pretty well. I don't trust their friends. I don't see someone trying to break it open and it is secure enough to keep from casually or even somewhat determinedly getting into it. And I check the drawer most days before bedtime, so I'd notice real quick if a non-burglar had moved or taken it. The safe in my gun room is a heck of a lot more secure. No quick way for a kid to get into that.

You could probably crawl in through the basement window, but it is fairly small and you'd almost certainly need to kick out the window or kick out the glass and open it and then rip the window out of the frame for anyone except some cirque de soleil MF or kid to climb through the window with the glass broken out and the window not removed from the frame. I'd imagine someone would just break into the house to get down there. With several outdoor security cameras, you'd either need to know they are there (they aren't THAT hidden) to find a way in that avoids showing up on camera or get lucky with that.

So probably you are on camera.

Most criminals seem pretty stupid. Not going to stop a really smart one.

Heck, for most houses a smart criminal would case it from a distance, make sure no one is home and sneak up and cut your cable/fiber/phone internet connection before attempting to break in. And/or cut open your electric meter and pull the meter out. Oops no power, no internet, no phone time to break-in.

I am not stopping the Maltese falcon thief or Ocean's eleven.

That is what having a lock box is for. Too each their own, but with little kids, it needs to be on you or locked up. Yes, it wastes precious seconds getting to it. A 3yr old opening a drawer and playing with your gun has some pretty high consequences.

I don't think what the person came up with is worthless. Heck, it has a lot of uses besides just guns.

As for other innovation, you could always just place the motion sensor IN the drawer, on the shelf, etc. with the gun. It doesn't need a wide field of view. Just enough to cover the gun.

But that said, how quickly will you see and react to the alert? I guess you can setup an automation to set off an alarm in the house to alert you. Don't forget to turn that off anytime YOU might move it.

Only takes a kid a second or two to shoot themself if the gun is unsecured and loaded.

While I'm a little obsessed with cameras watching outside my house, I'm very hesitant to put them inside...that's where I keep my secrets and I just don't trust the machines (I try very carefully to not let my phones see or hear anything unauthorized...but who knows how successful that is).

No kids and very few guests here. When I lived with my parents, and that was not always the case, I had considered rigging up a personal alarm (the little key fob thing that makes a terrible screech when the lanyard gets pulled out) on the defensive firearms, or their storage area.
I never got around to it (the need just didn't seem to be there), but I still like the idea. An authorized user who knows about the alarm could certainly deactivate it if stealthy access was needed. If anybody who didn't know about it moved the gun, it would let the whole house (and possibly neighbors know). If it was immediately needed for defense, the user would know (and not care) about the alarm going off, but it may certainly confuse or surprise the threat.

What motion sensor do you have?

    Batteries?

Runs off app or just an audible noise?

    Monthly fee?

My guns are locked in a safe that is inside a specialty locked combo closet with two locks on the exterior. My kids know not to mess with that closet and obviously can’t get in either but my fear is teenage friends down the line. I’m always open to ideas i didn’t know about and until y’all mentioned motion sensors in your safe i never even knew that was a thing.

I’d actually love to keep my work gun at work but with 15 years of a routine I’d forget i left it there and freak out.

That happened only once for me and resulted in a rushed trip back to work to retrieve it. Once was enough. :o

Yeah i have a solid routine. Keys and wallet got in the same place, gun gets locked up. On my Friday i throw gun in safe, on Sunday night i also lock my car keys in my safe so i can’t forget my gun on my Monday morning. It’s 2nd nature now.
