Back in the 80s, my dad decided to get into deer hunting. He purchased this Remington 1100, as well as a black powder and bolt action rifle.

He went hunting on a number of occasions, but over the seven years that he went hunting, he never successfully shot a deer. He did, however, roadkill several, including one on the way home from an unsuccessful hunting trip.

A while ago, he gave me his old deer hunting arms. I've been meaning to do some work on them, but hadn't gotten around to it until recently.

He wasn't very meticulous about maintenance or storage. For now, I'm happy with a thorough cleaning and some touch up, but down the road I'd like to get the shotgun refinished.

Halfway through disassembly. I also ended up removing the trigger group. Everything got cleaned, and relevant parts got oiled. o ring needed replacement as well.

Post-cleaning, with new magazine extension and synthetic furniture. Prior to beginning the renovations, I was convinced I'd prefer the shotgun with all black furniture. I've never previously been a fan of wood furniture; too "wild west" for me. After I had attached the mag extension though, I really liked the way it looked with wood. I still can't decide. Opinions?

I like the wood myself. That was a good looking shotgun then.....it still is now.

Had to chuckle on your mention of your Dad's lack of deer hunting success. Lots of younger folks don't know that today's deer population is many times what it was back in the 80's. In the 80's and before, "no deer" was much more oftentimes the norm.

    Gimmie wood.

Also, you can contact Remington and get a pretty close manufacture date on that. I tend to think that is a late 70's manufacture. There are letters in the s/n (A through Z) they correspond to years (resets every 26, you get the drift).

Wood, no doubt. Stock looks to be in nice shape, although that can me redone too. I just did a wingmaster. A nice professional rebluing job and dad would be proud.
    Very sharp looking shotgun!

    I like the black version.
I kinda dig it too. Whatever floats your boat - obviously with the original furniture it's a classic gun, but the black is a cool look too.

Here's and idea - a couple of months ago someone posted about doing a restoration on an 870 that had been fairly abused, and he stripped the old Remington poly finish and did a really nice oil finish on the walnut. You might consider doing that, and in the meantime keep the black. Heck if all else fails, you might be able to make a few bucks by selling the refinished wood furniture. The oil finish gives it a really nice classic glow.

Interesting you say that. I wanted to avoid going full-on tacticool, and thought I did a good job of keeping things sensible: no pistol grip, no rails, no ghost ring, no one-point sling, etc.

Well I wouldn't necessarily object to a shotgun that was purpose built new like that but since this one started life with some good looking wood it just seems wrong to put synthetic furniture on it. Also the engraving didn't really work with the new look. I tend to like things original :)

Fair enough...and I agree about the engraving :)
