The hallucinogenic class of mushrooms is called psilocybins. Those are the ones DEA considers class 1 controlled substance- no accepted medical usage.

For the legal ones, I picked some in the woods as a kid with grandpa, also looking like the ones pictured. I am going to pick up a book. It would be a way to take the kids out, and scout for turkey slaying places at the same time.

ONE of the hallucinogenic mushrooms is the Psilocybin, and there are a bunch of them http://www.erowid.org/plants/mushrooms/mushrooms.shtml , and a lot more containing hallucinogens and a variety of interesting proteins, some of them causing catastrophic liver failure and a rapid and painful death.

Anybody wants to get into 'shrooming, don't just get a book and start hunting. That's a good way to wind up on a slab with cold, yellow skin. :sad20::sad20::facepalm:

Even Morels (tasty little buggers:yummy:) have dopplegangers that can kill you: see http://thegreatmorel.com/falsemorel.html and http://thegreatmorel.com/v274p3-11.pdf

Unless you really know what you're doing, a high level of discretion is indicated.:fingerscrossed::outta her

Learn how to do a spore print.

I got into mushroom hunting when I found a King Bolete on the front lawn of my high school. I showed it to a bio teacher and he completely freaked out. It was about a foot tall and fifteen inches across.

Took it home and sauteed it with butter, garlic and some chicken breast. I can still taste it now, mmm mmmm good!

Spore prints are usually definitive. problem is, by the time you get the spore print (assuming you've already learned to ID with them) what you have left of the mushroom is way past its' prime, if not entirely inedible. It's a good step on the path to learning , though. but one wrong step and its :puke::puke2: if you're lucky...

Hughmon -- guess I walked right into that one, eh?:lol: well played.

Sorry, I could not help myself.

    Good info, though.

How long does it take you to do a spore print? Cut a cap off and place half of it over a piece of white paper, half over black paper and wait overnight. There are some varieties that break down rapidly but most are still going to be edible after a night in a fridge. The tricky ones to print are those that release spores erratically.

Aside from morels, what other edible varieties grow in this area? I've only seen amanitas and the typical lbms/wbms out here.

I'm in SoMD, so it may be different. Last year, I started to try to grow some mushrooms. Morels, oyster, shiitake, and a tooth type. The oysters started to produce last fall after starting them in late spring. I'm about to start another group this year.

After carefully studying them, I've been able to find lots of oysters growing mainly on tulip popular and puffballs. The oysters are really nice cooked in a little olive oil and garlic.

I researched several suppliers and ordered from 'Fungi perfecti'. Just google

POP POP POP. This should be a good year for Morels. Who else hunts these tasty mushrooms ? I say hunt because they try and hide from you while in the woods.

Grb...they look like this...Can't miss one when you see it in the woods. You usually don't find that many in one bunch, but it can happen.

have spotted those along the AT between front royal and harpers ferry depending on the season and the rain

I watch for the tulips to bloom. I find that they bloom about the same time as the first mushrooms come out. I'd guess it's just a bit too cold yet for the full season.

This one girl I dated cooked me dinner with a giant mushroom she had found in rock creek park... made me feel kinda funny. If she didn't live in DC she might have made the cut... aside from the tingling feeling in my mouth she made a pretty good pot roast.
